Like a sleeping giant, Mount Shasta dominates the mountains of Northern California. It dwarfs everything in sight including the iron horses that have traversed its flanks for the past 130 years. Carved out of the base of the volcano, this highway paved with steel continues to be a vital link between the Pacific Northwest and California. It guides trains through some of the most beautiful country in the state.

From Redding, California in the south to Klamath Falls, Oregon in the north, the main line crosses impressive bridges, bores through several tunnels, curves inside deep canyons, and weaves across lonely desert valleys. Through this rough course of 172 miles, the railroad gains over 4,000 feet in elevation. In a follow up to our 2007 release The Shasta Route, we return to one of our favorite locations to view today's Union Pacific in action.

There is nothing like the show of modern high-powered diesels tackling a 2.2% mountain grade on a hot summer afternoon or racing through a frozen desert on a chilly winter morning. Shot with broadcast quality Hi-Definition and 4K equipment, this is truly a stunning picture of trains traveling through the shadow of Mt. Shasta.

This program was shot between December 2015 and May 2016.

2 hours 35 minutes running time.

Aaron has done it again! Another home run and IMO a grand slam at that! A few weeks ago in reviewing his DVD "The Shasta Route" I asked him to redo it, only this time in Blue Ray. Unknown to me he had already done so or was doing it. I said if he did he would turn a superb video into a spectacular one. And, that is exactly what he has done. I watched both, one after the other, and except for a cab ride over the Redding Trestle on the DVD plus about ten minutes showing UP's steam 4-6-6-4 Challenger, also on and at the end of the DVD, the Blue Ray has everything else the DVD has, and then some. The picture, while good on the DVD, is much improved in the Blue Ray, as one would expect. The commentary is slightly different as one would also expect, e.g. he didn't mention on the Blue Ray the alleged lost treasure on Castle Crag, nor the tallest flag pole west of the Mississippi at Dorris, CA (Of course maybe the flag pole no longer existed when he redid this video and maybe someone had found the lost treasure. :>) He paced a train in the DVD but not in the Blue Ray. But these are minor items and one cannot expect two videos on the same subject to be exactly the same any way. IMO you will not be disappointed if you buy this one.

Additional remarks by Train Buff:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? Maybe.
Image quality: Excellent!
DVD Value: Excellent Value!
Recommend to others? A "Must Have"!

Though this wasn't my first introduction to a 7Idea Production video, this was my first purchase of one and it is fantastic! Having seen a few videos edited for the 1-hour time slot of RFD-TV, I was already impressed with the video production skills and subjects of 7Idea Productions, but to see a full video in full Blu-ray quality really is a whole new and 100% better experience, especially for such a reasonable price.

UP fans, GE fans, fans of Northern California mountain railroading will not be disappointed in this one. By my memories count, there were only 7 non-Union Pacific paint scheme units in this video, not counting Amtrak. GE Gevo's from old to brand spanking new ET45AC's are running the show near Mt. Shasta these days with a sprinkling of SD70ACe/SD70M's, AC4400CW's rounding out UP's road power. Plus a GP60, mistakenly called a GP40, and a couple of SD59MX's in Redding, and a couple of BNSF units, including a GP30, in Klamath Falls.

Small town depots, huge and small bridges and trestles, beautiful and finally 'FULL' mountain lakes, rivers and streams, mountain grades and curves and flat straightaways, busy Interstate highways to very quiet desolate wide open uncluttered wilderness, springtime flowers and super frosty winter mornings, and even some wild critters are all shown in this great video! I wouldn't hesitate to buy this one again if I had to.

I wait for each documentary release by 7idea with great eagerness. This Title does not disappoint and only enhances the high quality releases. Lots of great action to keep your attention, wonderful scenery, very well produced, and unlike some, great attention to site location information. Awesome.

Get this DVD and you can't put it down....another awesome Disc from 7 Idea productions, I garbed a copy of this DVD in Blue Ray and the image quality and sound is out of this world. Everything in this DVD is what you have come to expect from 7 Idea...lots of train action some interesting footage of scenery and available wildlife "Watch out for that Rattle Snake" all filmed in rich color in all four seasons. "A Must Have"

Another great release from 7idea. As is customary, the area-information and narration supplement the excellent videography. I especially enjoyed great footage and scenery around the Dunsmuir area. I'm always happy with 7idea purchases - and this was no exception.
