Nickel Plate 765's appearance in Michigan during 2009 has spawned renewed interest in this 2-8-4 steam locomotive. This coverage is from 1986 when 765 powered heavy trains at speed along the former C&O mainline. We begin with a weekend of Huntington to Hinton roundtrips on the famous New River Trains. No engine sounds louder than 765 as it starts a 29 coach train from St. Albums, or powers along at 50+ miles per hour. You will also see the last use of steam on the Hinton turntable. These trips have always been classic steam action, and 765 puts on a great show. Next we watch 765 on a one-way trip to Cincinnati from Huntington, which includes some nice side-by-side pacing shots from the car in good afternoon light.

From Cincinnati, 765 powered a weekend of trips to Russell, KY, which was the last stronghold of Chesapeake and Ohio Steam during the steam era. This trip includes some nice fall colors as it travels along the Ohio River.

Originally this program was 46 minutes on videotape, but now its been re-edited for DVD and includes more scenes, and extra footage including two days of 765 from 1985 trips in the same area. This includes one trip from Huntington to Hinton, and another one-way trip toward Cincinnati.

While this program features re-edited October 1986 action of 765, there are never before seen unaired pilot footages of 765 a year earlier from the short lived 1985-1987 video: New River Express. Mainly its because of the ugly picture quality from the panasonic supertube.

Got this and 2 others just a few short days after Halloween, and it was well worth it!

This DVD focuses on an engine that resides in my home state believe or not - back in it's glory days before CSX and NS banned steam from their rails around '93 or '94. 765 was a regular runner for the New River Trains in October, and the images of it here running through the New River Gorge are spectacular. Some great shots of the locomotive blasting out of the fog, or through the fall foliage, and the dramatic steam effects from the cold weather are astounding. How I wish I could see that in person. :)

This is a DVD I think any Nickel Plate fan, or 765 fan, or just any die-hard railfan would have of a once roving goodwill ambassador for Indiana.
