In this all trains magazine DVD exclusive, the program starts with crewmember Martin Hansen talking about the success of the 2-4-4-2. The history begins with the skookums life in Tennessee on the little river railroad which includes a black and white photograph of 4-6-2 number 110 which is now operating at coldwater Michigan as it is seen operating on a mixed freight & passenger special. 2-4-4-2 number 126 was scrapped due to the heavy tonnage on the engine itself leaving only 148 Operating as the smallest articulated standard gauge steam locomotive ever built for regular service. Skookum is a salish Indian word meaning big & strong. In later years during regular service, number 7 was sold to the Carlisle lumber company in Washington state. From onboard one of the trains, an interview with Charles givens is shown. Charles was The original photographer who shot The engine in regular service. With the history segment completed, Martin talks about The time that The skookum derailed at 8 miles per hour. Unfortunately, the number 7 was toppled off The rails as other locomotives are passing by the unactive 2-4-4-2. To make matters worse, the workmen are ripping up The tracks leaving a dead 2-4-4-2 waiting for something to happen until July of 1960 when it was not only rescued, but also has to be disassembled in pieces due to parts that are damaged and/or missing. The since been discontinued Mt Rainier scenic railroad did have plans to restore the skookum to operating condition in 1991, but it unfortunately failed. Several years later, the disassembled locomotive moved to Centralia by Christopher baldo. Baldo also owns mason county lumber 2-6-2 tank engine number 7. On the Tillamook bay branch, there are still images of Burlington northern freights. When The freight trains aren't operating, Curtis lumber company heisler number 2 operates out of garibaldi. Scott wickert talks about his vision on restoring the skookum beginning with The tender. More still images of the skookums parts are included. On one of the still images, the skookum is behind The tender of McCloud 25. For The first time since February 1955 (the same time period where Santa Fe 3759 operates the final run of steam over Cajon pass), the skookum was fired up on September 21, 2018. During the ceremony, the Baldwin banner was hang over The boiler of the skookum as well as a whistle show from McCloud 25, Polson logging 2-8-2 number 2, & The skookum number 7. Almost a month later on October 18, the skookum is backing out of the shops. 5 months later & a record breaking government shutdown later on Wednesday March 13, 2019 (less Than 2 months before The 150th anniversary of the golden spike with The inaugural run of Union Pacific big boy 4014) The skookum is being towed out of the shops by great northern F7 number 274 in garibaldi. Later in The day, Polson number 2 brings some empty flat cars for The preparations of tomorrow's trip at Tillamook. Afterwards, the number 2 crosses over the wooden trestle in idaville Oregon as it creates a reflection shot for the cameras. Next, the Mikado passes by some late winter & early spring blooming trees, followed by a night photo session in garibaldi, as the skookum makes a test run in The dark. The following Thursday March 14, finds Polson 2 Operating on a mixed freight train with a passenger car on The rear, Skookum 7 on an empty log train, & McCloud 25 on a bay window caboose hop. A total of 40 railfans were there for this once in a lifetime event. The first photo runby of The day was at The garibaldi fishing pier, with Skookum 7 doing a whistle show. Moments later, the next runby location is at barview, followed by Smith lake. Afterwards, the Polson logging Mikado is crossing The Nehalem river bridge in mohler, followed by the skookum itself. The final runby of the Thursday special was at the washout site near The Nehalem river as The skookum whistles by The location. At sunset, the 2-4-4-2 had ran around The cars so that it could run tender first on its way back to garibaldi. The next scene was made at Smith lake, followed by an arrival at garibaldi. Before the Friday March 15, 2019 run, Martin talks about The operations of the number 7 itself, as well as the original paint on the boiler as it explains from the original order form despite the blueprints are gone for good. With that segment finished, the Friday special begins at the fishing pier with Polson 2 on a mixed freight followed by the skookum in The early morning sun. The next scene shows The skookum at rockaway beach. Later in the day, the 2-4-4-2 crosses over a small bridge, & later with The flagpole in The background. In wheeler, Polson 2 rolls along the shore with The local highway in The background. Moments later, the skookum takes The siding at the same location. The engineer for the locomotive is Steve butler. Here he talks about the controls on the skookum from both the driver's side & The fireman side While Polson 2 switched directions in the background. With a tour of the cab finished, the number 7 is entering the mountain terrtiory, as it was recorded from a local highway. Near Foss, a head on Chase of the skookum is included. Back on the ground, old number 7 whistles through foss. The final runby of The Friday special is at the North end of batterson siding. The day was a success for the restored 2-4-4-2, until a mechanical problem happened that Friday evening at the garibaldi shops. With no time to get her back on track, the Sunday March 17, special would only be operating with McCloud 25 on a mixed freight, & Polson 2 on an empty log train. At rockaway beach, Polson 2 whistles for the crossing. Next, the McCloud 25 crosses over the Nehalem river bridge, then later at the location beyond the previous scene, followed by foss. In The early evening, the skookum was back in action at garibaldi. On Monday March 18, the 2-4-4-2 had rejoined it's own log cars. Some go pro footage from the first flatbed behind The skookum is included as well as a cab ride. Back on the ground, the engine is along The shore as it goes through the forest, While The camera cuts to the cab & flat car. The skookum crosses over a small wooden trestle, followed by another bridge at wheeler as Polson 2 handles the mixed freight. A few afternoon runbys for the skookum was made north of wheeler. With the March 2019 specials finished, number 7 had already ran around the cars tender first for its trip back to garibaldi. Some closing remarks from Martin & Charles are shown as well as some still images of the skookum crew with one of the dogs. In the closing credits, Steve Sweeney was The narrator for this program while there is more go pro footage from the log car.
