In this 75 minute DVD from 2016, we start the program with a look at how the state played a huge role in railroading. Which includes vintage still images of the early years of railroading in the rocky state. Multiple Union Pacific freights are shown, as well as the Denver skyline. Plus an upgrade on union station with Amtrak�s California Zephyr, And The RTD light rail systems. Nowadays, the Crawford hotel is located on the elevated floors. At the forney museum, there is a look at streetcar 40, an 0-4-4 steamer, several coaches, as well as random automobiles and motorbikes. The crown jewel at the museum is Big Boy 4005. Plus a rotary snowplow, and Chicago And Northwestern ten wheeler type locomotive 444 is also on display. 10 minutes or more west of Downtown Denver is Golden the headquarters of the Colorado railroad museum. An interview with Donald Tallman is included. The museum owns Rio Grande 318, west side lumber company shay number 12 which was once operational at the Georgetown loop railroad, Union Pacific 0-6-0 4455, and some 2-8-0 consolidation type engines numbers 30, and 40. Plus a rotary snowplow is shown, as well as more engines and rolling stock on display. Some of the Crown Jewels on display at the museum is Rio Grande F unit 5771, manitou and Pikes peak cog railway number 1, Burlington 4-8-4 #5629, and Denver South Park And pacific 2-8-0 number 191 which is known as the state�s oldest steam engine. The museum also has galloping geese motorcars. Around the museum loop, Rio Grande 2-8-0 #346 operates multiple trips around the museum. For a ride around the museum loop, we took a ride on goose 7 built in 1936. Leaving the museum, we Head south of Denver for some BNSF action to the joint line at Pueblo. We some some action at Castle Rock, Larkspur, academy, bragdon south of Colorado Springs with Union Pacific power, Palmer lake with a perfect reflection shot, and the next day at the same spot. Leaving the BNSF line, we head back north. This time to Georgetown. Some vintage still images are shown, and we see some present Georgetown loop action with a map of the tourist attraction. West side lumber 3 truck shay number 9 is passing by Devils gate station, whistling through the bottom of the loop, and alongside the cliffs. A ride over the high bridge is included, as well as a runby of the shay is included from different angles. Some riding footage behind the shay is included. A final runby is shown that includes the engine whistling pass the yellow leaf trees. Next we head to the canon city and royal gorge railroad. Some onboard footage is included. From 1967-1997 it was an all mainline freight only line, but since 1999, it is now a tourist attraction. An interview with Evan Yost is included. We made a brief stop at the hanging bridge, and truth be told that the 1929 suspension bridge, is the highest bridge in the world. Some flashbacks more than 20 years ago to the Tennessee pass line was shown, which includes a Rio Grande freight that has Canadian Pacific units on the consist. Some runbys are shown at the edge of the gorge, as well as Granite, pacing a different freight at the gorge, and see the CP train outside of Minturn. At the Mitchell Curves on Tennessee pass, Southern Pacific power negotiates the bend in the Rockies. This freight had a Rio Grande unit between the 4 SP units. Truth be told, the Tennessee pass line was the very first standard Gauge route to traverse the Rockies. Next we see the same train leaving the tunnel. Note the crew member on the Rio Grande unit. During the 1997 NRHS convention, Union Pacific operates a special farewell to Tennessee pass excursion for a 3 day one way trip from Denver to Salt Lake City. While E units 949 and 951 power the excursion. The journey is being led by none other than Never retired northern 844. Unfortunately, 844 didn�t whistle to the camera in this scene. Leaving the pass, we head back to the present time as we visit the nearby Leadville Colorado & Southern, which is located at the base of Tennessee pass. The line from here to climax, was formed in 1987 after the acquisition from Burlington Northern. Some onboard footage is included. The tallest height is at an elevation of 11,318 Ft. We moved to Alamosa, for a visit to the Rio Grande scenic on the La Veta pass line. On one trip, the train is pulled by 40s and 80s built diesels. While the other train is pulled by none other than Lake Superior and ishpeming 18 which used to operate at the Grand Canyon Railway in Arizona. We see the locomotive crossing the Rio Grande River at Alamosa, whistling Alongside a dirt road, and slowing down between Fir and Sierra. Plus the engine passes a siding at Occidental, but with an empty hopper train. Next we are at Mule Shoe Loop near Fir. Leaving the La Veta pass line we head to The border as we witnessed one of the most popular steam powered tourist attractions in America, known as the Cumbres & Toltec scenic. We see 487 passing Cresco tank, followed by a line up with 463, 484, 487, 488, And 489 at Chama. Then comes 463 going backwards, and afterwards we see 484 renumbered to 485 for a photo special. Some onboard footage is included as we are facing west to chama. We passed a water tower, then we are entering the San Juan valley. We pass the Garfield monument, then we are squeezing through Toltec gorge. An interview with The railroad president John Bush is included. At The Osier lunch stop, we pass 487 heading to Antonito. From here we see a tripleheader freight with 463, 484, and 489. Note the wheelslip. Next we see the special at Lobato siding. A ride aboard the caboose is included, as John added more detail on the history of the line. Snow has fallen at the Coxo crossing where the tripleheader passes the telephone booth. Leaving the C&TS, we head to the second cog railway in America behind New Hampshire�s Mt. Washington. This is what is known as the manitou and pikes peak railway. A ride on the Switzerland built motor coaches are included. Some meets are included. Gaining elevation, we see some eagle eye views of other Colorado towns, as we are at 14,110 Ft above sea level. At the top of the mountain, the snow never stops falling. Leaving the cog, we made a visit to the Cripple creek and Victor 2 ft narrow Gauge railroad as German built 0-4-0 number 2 powered the train down the line. We returned to BNSF mainline action, as we are at the moffat tunnel line. We see a different BNSF freight at the Big 10 curve. Location are shown at Plainview, Pinecliffe, rollinsville, and some Union Pacific action is included alongside the riverbed, and Tolland. Finally we are at one of the Colorado railroad landmarks: the 7 mile long Moffat Tunnel. A history of the tunnel is included with vintage still images. Amtrak�s California Zephyr is at Gore Canyon. We see some BNSF action at Yarmony. The Zephyr is at the state bridge east of Bond. Then Union Pacific crosses the Colorado River at Bond. We see another Union Pacific freight at Burns, and BNSF at an unknown location. The California Zephyr passes through Glenwood Canyon. A ride behind the genesis units and the baggage car is included with a musical background to glenwood springs. We pass through Byers Canyon, Gore Canyon, And Glenwood Canyon. All too soon, we arrived at the station, as the Zephyr continues westbound. More Rio Grande steam action continues, as we are at the Durango & Silverton. We start with 478 on a mixed train, then we see Rio Grande scenic F unit 1100 on a mixed train. At Durango, we see the mixed train leaving town shot from a high mountain. Next we are at Hermosa as 482 powers the regular passenger train, then we paced 478 on a mixed special. North of Hermosa, we see 478 and 486 on a doubleheaded passenger run. Afterwards we see 481 at Elbert Creek on the Highline over the animas River. Some onboard footage with 481 is included. We are south of silverton as the engine whistles through. Next we are at an identical spot this time with 482 powering the train. Then comes 482 from across the River. Approaching silverton from a mountain slope, we see a different engine coming into town, and see a close up look of 486 arriving in the street. Finally we conclude the program with a look at the future of Colorado railroading. Plus a look at Denver�s expansion of the city�s RTD light rail system. An interview with CEO and Manager David Genova is included. We even witnessed a special BNSF freight, that has new and improved RTD cars. The final 5 minutes of this video concludes with a short explanation of why Colorado is one of the most popular states to visit for Railfans everywhere. The end credits shows 489 & 484 operating a winter freight with 3 cabooses on the Cumbres & Toltec.
