If you have no experience with steam locomotives and 611 in particular, or if you have memories of 611 during the 80's and 90's excursion service, this is a must have dvd. Scene transitions are smooth, video quality and narration is top shelf. I had hoped to see more coverage of the rebuild process, alas, not much of that. The comments provided by former and retired railroaders only adds to the program value-if that's not enough, nature provided some beautiful scenery!

611 in steam is an hour long video trains magazine made to look at the return of Norfolk & western class j northern no.611 in 2015 the video starts with vintage footage looking back at the old days of steam on the n&w which looks at the class j northerns (all 14 of them) they were the most reliable engines ever built pulling the n&w's famed passenger train the powhatan arrow and others like the pocahontas and the cavalier and used on the southerns passenger trains such as the tennessean the birmingham special and the pelican (but not the famed crescent) and showing the 611 on the 1956 derailment and spent the whole year in the n&w shops and coming out as good as new and how the 611 was the j to pull many farewell to steam trips and saved from the scrapers torch that her 13 sisters meet their fate with (and also with the help of famed railroad photographer o. Winston link who should be credited as he was also another reason why the 611 was saved) and there's clips of the 611 on her first excursion duty's in the 1980s and 90s than the big look at the 2015 restoration and first runs this is a exciting video on 611's return to steam if you're a die hard fan of the 611 like me you'll want to add this video with your other 611 videos

First this program starts with the history of N&W steam in the '40s and '50s (despite these films were mostly silent but with dubbed fake sounds). As well as some still images which includes 611 in 1956 during the crash but was the only j class northern in the best shape before the end of regular steam. Plus some color stills of the VMT in the '60s & '70s, with some early video tape camera footage of the j being moved from Roanoke to Birmingham in 1981, and the now 35 year old footage of 611's first excursion days in 1982. Plus 1992 action on saluda grade in north Carolina. As well as one clip of 611's final days of excursion service in 1994 due to NS' new manager Dave Goode. 15 to 16 years later with Goode's retirement. The new manager has a big heart of steam and would create the ultimate revival. As some clips of southern 2-8-0 630 is shown as well. Plus 2014 coverage of moving the j from Roanoke to Spencer during the streamliner's at Spencer event as well as restoration footages. And the test runs on national train day 2015, plus the first trip to Greensboro, and a one way homecoming trip to Roanoke. But before 611 goes home, the engine would have to perform a small freight special at Spencer. More trips were added during 611's comeback. Such as the Manassas railway festival, multiple trips to front royal over linden hill, what the railfans thought of 611 itself, and on home rails from Lynchburg to Petersburg. Plus a one way freight from Lynchburg to Spencer is shown. As well as a cab tour on how the J works. Plus a hands on the throttle experience with a southern bay window caboose, and another one way freight but its on the return home to Roanoke. As well as the 239th birthday of america weekend specials from mornings to Lynchburg, and afternoon journeys to Walton.
