This DVD includes footage of steam locomotives running on five tourist railroads. All involve photo charters, which I view as a positive in that they could get shots that rail photographers would not normally get. This was particularly true on the Durango & Silverton. While "staged," all the tourist railroads are similarly artificial, so it did not bother me. Purists will not the occasional presence of obviously empty cars, and it is true there's too much whistle in some segments. Overall, however, quality of the footage is excellent (both technically and content), the narration not too intrusive. I got this, incredibly, for $1 on TVD's brief fling with a special of the day. Too bad more people didn't take advantage of that so they would continue it, but even at the regular price this caseless DVD (you can always buy a cheap case) is an excellent buy.

Being a British Rail Fan, having toured Colorado two years ago, and ridden on most of the heritage lines in the state, I was interested in purchasing this DVD at the ridiculously low price.
What a buy! The winter scenery is magnificent, and the trains, smoke and steam spectacular.
But beware! The scenes are all taken on photographer's special run-pasts, and therefore the driver(engineer!) is extremely whistle happy, which can become a little wearing, particularly on the Heber Valley section.
But great value!!

Watching trains in action is a mystic experience, and to see Steam trains working 40 to 50 years past the time of the diesel take over adds to it. Even more to add interest is the elements of Mother Nature. Winter railroading is a thing unto it's own. Battling the snow and harseness of the cold can really make a person understand that. You don't have to be a Canadian to understand it. In this video, 5 different USA steam trains are seen from Nevada and Utah to Maryland operating in the winter conditions. We receive really good insight into what it is like in less than favorable conditions. The producers have done a fine job putting together the great video that so few of us have seen in our life time. From the mountains of Colorado to the much lower hills of Maryland, this is a video that everyone will enjoy for years to come.
