"The Royal Gorge" is a publicity film made in the late 1940s by Missouri Pacific, the Rio Grande and Western Pacific to promote travel on their jointly operated heavyweight train between St. Louis and Oakland. It presents footage of steam engines from all three roads, including D&RGW doubleheaders. The scenery is superb through Royal George, over Tennessee Pass, along the Great Salt Lake, and down Feather River Canyon.

"Trouble at Troublesome" is an instructional film made by the D&RGW following a 1956 accident on its Moffat Tunnel Route. After two freight trains collided at Troublesome Siding, the railroad staged a reenactment of events leading up to the mishap. You'll see F-units in the original pinstripe scheme, steam-powered Big Hooks cleaning up the derailment, and the California Zephyr gliding by after the main line was reopened.

"Railroading with the Rio Grande" tells the story of a large construction project awarded to Morrison-Knudsen. See Rio Grande trains as well as construction of track, bridges and even a tunnel. 1962. This film is also in the Pentrex Morrison Knudsen collection.

These are films from the 1940s,'50s and '60s, all color, showing scenes of the Rio Grande that have long since disappeared.

When this program was first released on VHS only 20 years ago in 1999, there were only 2 films (Royal Gorge, & Trouble at Troublesome). Now in the final year of this decade (Pentrexs 35th year) 2019, another film was added on the DVD version, which was railroading with the Rio Grande. All 3 films are excellent. And these will take you back in time which was recorded way before the 1988 acquisition with Southern Pacific, and also for the 1996 Merger with Union Pacific. What a great mix of steam and Early Diesel action, in all of Colorado railroading.

Additional remarks by Steamboy:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? Maybe.
Image quality: A little rough around the edges.
DVD Value: Good Value
Recommend to others? Yes.
