Providing an important connection for midwestern roads Nickel Plate and Wabash, the LV also tapped the rich anthracite coalfields of Pennsylvania in the process. Pennsylvania and New York locations visited in Volume 1 include Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, Lehighton, Van Etten Jct, Rochester Jct, and Niagra Jct. The Valley of the 1970s was reknown for the varied and colorful paint schemes on its fleet of Alco, EMD and GE locomotives, and few railroads could offer its variety of motive power. Locomotives seen include Fs, GPs, RS3s, SW8s, GP38s, U23Bs, C420s, C628s, and a brief look at the Delaware and Hudson Sharks used between Binghamton and Sayre. Father-and son LV employees Charles and Kenneth Bealer teamed up to record their favorite railroad on film from 1970 until its inclusion into Conrail, and their work is showcased in Volume 1 of Vignettes of the LEHIGH VALLEY. 60 minutes, sound, narration, color, DVD-R format. |
