In the heart of America there is a super-highway paved with steel running between North Platte and Gibbon Junction, Nebraska.

It is known as the Kearney Subdivision and historically it has seen well over 100 trains per day. Traffic may be down from the line's heyday in the early and mid-2000's, yet this is still a fantastic place to watch trains.

This program begins with a nighttime visit to the Golden Spike Tower as a summertime thunderstorm lights up Bailey Yard. We then turn east through Maxwell, the Buttermilk Curves, Gothenburg, Lexington, Kearney, Gibbon Junction, and many other noted locations before wrapping up at the BNSF flyover at Grand Island.

Dominating the scene are monster double-coal trains that measure up to three miles in length, running to and from Wyoming's Powder River Basin. In addition to coal are mixed manifests, hot-shot intermodals, and locals that service industry found along the route.

Along with cameras on the ground, aerial coverage of the Buttermilk Curves and Gibbon Junction gives a whole new perspective to this amazing line.

In this sequel to the 2-Part Sidney Subdivision Series that was filmed in August of 2021, there are lots & lots of diesels as well as Big Boy 4014 on its 80th Birthday Trip from Cheyenne Wyoming to New Orleans Louisiana which is the very first time in US Railroading history, that a Steam Locomotive is equipped with Positive Train Control. Locations include Bailey Yard in North Platte Nebraska with the Golden Spike Tower in a lightning storm as well as a mention of the 1995 Guiness Book of world records plus a time-lapse of the hump yards, Keith, East Keith, Maxwell, Pawnee, Brady's Buttermilk Bends, Gothenburg in a lightning storm at night, Willow Island with raining coal dust coming out of the coal hoppers, Cozad with a caboose & station on display, Darr, Lexington that was named Plum Creek at one time, Overton, Elm Creek with a Bay window Caboose in the middle, Agrex, Odessa, Kearney with the Trails & Rails Museum that has a depot from Shelton & 2-8-0 number 481 (referenced to a Rio Grande 2-8-2 on the Durango & Silverton) on display, Gibbon Wye with the Marysville Subdivision Shelton, Wood River, & Ends at Grand Island. Aside from Union Pacific, other road names are shown like BNSF, Southern Pacific, Norfolk Southern, NJRX Leasing with a Former Southern SD20, CSX, Nebraska Central with former Burlington Northern SD40-2s, & others at the Wood River Grain Elevator. Coverage from Cheyenne Wyoming to Bailey Yard can be found in the Sidney Subdivision 2 part series that also includes 4014 going Eastbound.

As I've mentioned many times before, I am a long-time 7idea customer, with a vast majority of Aaron's catalog in my collection. I feel that they are one of the best, if not the best, producers of railfan dvd's. I am always impressed with the excellent videography and informative narration. The biggest draw for me, has always been the scenic locations, which add immensely to my overall enjoyment of the dvd's. With that said, and after viewing the preview of The Kearney Sub many times, I somewhat reluctantly clicked on the "Add to Cart" button. And while not totally disappointed with the purchase, I did soon tire of scenes of trains racing through the flatlands of Nebraska, highlighted only by grain elevators and sunflowers. Aaron summed it up best during the narration, when he added (paraphrased) "Nebraska is not known for it's scenery, but there are still some nice locations". The drone footage was good, but after a while I'd had enough. I want to emphasize that this is a good dvd for those who like this type of thing. Just not my cup of tea. And after 3 consecutive releases filmed in Nebraska, I'm hoping that Aaron will, once again, return to more scenic areas. There's plenty left to see out there!
