In the heart of America there is a super-highway paved with steel running between North Platte and Gibbon Junction, Nebraska.

It is known as the Kearney Subdivision and historically it has seen well over 100 trains per day. Traffic may be down from the line's heyday in the early and mid-2000's, yet this is still a fantastic place to watch trains.

This program begins with a nighttime visit to the Golden Spike Tower as a summertime thunderstorm lights up Bailey Yard. We then turn east through Maxwell, the Buttermilk Curves, Gothenburg, Lexington, Kearney, Gibbon Junction, and many other noted locations before wrapping up at the BNSF flyover at Grand Island.

Dominating the scene are monster double-coal trains that measure up to three miles in length, running to and from Wyoming's Powder River Basin. In addition to coal are mixed manifests, hot-shot intermodals, and locals that service industry found along the route.

Along with cameras on the ground, aerial coverage of the Buttermilk Curves and Gibbon Junction gives a whole new perspective to this amazing line.

As I've mentioned many times before, I am a long-time 7idea customer, with a vast majority of Aaron's catalog in my collection. I feel that they are one of the best, if not the best, producers of railfan dvd's. I am always impressed with the excellent videography and informative narration. The biggest draw for me, has always been the scenic locations, which add immensely to my overall enjoyment of the dvd's. With that said, and after viewing the preview of The Kearney Sub many times, I somewhat reluctantly clicked on the "Add to Cart" button. And while not totally disappointed with the purchase, I did soon tire of scenes of trains racing through the flatlands of Nebraska, highlighted only by grain elevators and sunflowers. Aaron summed it up best during the narration, when he added (paraphrased) "Nebraska is not known for it's scenery, but there are still some nice locations". The drone footage was good, but after a while I'd had enough. I want to emphasize that this is a good dvd for those who like this type of thing. Just not my cup of tea. And after 3 consecutive releases filmed in Nebraska, I'm hoping that Aaron will, once again, return to more scenic areas. There's plenty left to see out there!

Additional remarks by Curt Cruthirds:
Narration: Just enough.
Image quality: Excellent!
DVD Value:: Fair.
Recommend to others? Not unless they REALLY were interested in the subject matter.
