Running nearly 220 miles between Cheyenne, Wyoming and North Platte, Nebraska, the Sidney Subdivision is a double-track main line that has carried Union Pacific trains for over 150 years. Following the route of the historic Pony Express and Overland Stage, a parade of increasingly long and heavy trains traverse the southern Nebraska Panhandle.
In part one of this two-part series, we will cover the western half of the Sidney Subdivision beginning in Cheyenne. Trains climb east over Archer Hill then sprint into Nebraska at Pine Bluff. We will visit several small towns, many of which started as sidings on the first transcontinental railroad.
Witness huge manifest trains pulling up to 200 cars and measuring up to three miles long. Adding to the variety, unit trains of grain, coal, and intermodal, including hot-shot Z trains sprint across the Cornhusker State heading to and from Bailey Yard, the largest railroad classification yard in the world.
Our summertime visit coincided with UP Big Boy number 4014's eastbound excursion across the subdivision and we will see the giant 4,000 class engine at several locations.

In Part 1 that was filmed in July & August of 2021, there are not only a variety of diesels on the Union Pacific, but also Big Boy 4014 traveling from Cheyenne Wyoming to New Orleans Louisiana for not only the steam engine's 80th Birthday Tour, but also the very first time in railroading history that a Steam Locomotive was equipped with Positive Train Control. Locations for part 1 includes Cheyenne Wyoming during Frontier Days, Barnett, Archer Hill, Hillsdale, Burns, Eggbert Wye where the north leg goes to the rarely used Albin Tunnel line to Yoder & La Grange, Pine Bluffs with historic gas pumps, Milepost 460, Bushnell Nebraska, Kimball with Veterans Unit 1943 in one scene, Owasco, Dix, Jacinto, Potter with a small museum, Point of Rocks, Brownson & ends at Sidney Nebraska. Other Road Names are shown including Norfolk Southern, Kansas City Southern, CSX, High Plains Co-Op with a GP9, BNSF, & Chicago & Northwestern. A Mention of Part 2 from Sidney was shown as these 2 parts are Prequels to the Kearney Sub from North Platte to Grand Island which also stars 4014. Besides 7Idea, Trains Magazine, & Jim Parfrey of Steam Train Videos, was also on the Big Boy's first day's trip to New Orleans.
