We begin our visit to Union Pacific's famous Sherman Hill in Cheyenne, Wyoming and Cheyenne Yard. Between Cheyenne and Laramie is the crossing of the Continental Divide with three tracks over Sherman Hill. Tracks 1 and 2 have a 1.55% ruling grade while track 3 is at less than 1%. This stretch of railroad has always been a challenge for the Union Pacific and the giant 4-8-8-4 Big Boys were designed to handle this... now it's big diesels, the newest and biggest diesels Union Pacific rosters.This program was shot using professional equipment of the time, but is not up to the clarity of today's high-definition video. It is however an excellent snapshot of an important time and place in the nation's railroad history.
