The Marysville Sub is one of Union Pacific's busiest routes, supporting tremendous traffic between Gibbon Junction, Nebraska and Kansas City. This was especially true in the late 1990s when Pentrex produced its two volumes covering this active area. Volume 1 covers the line from Gibbon Junction to Marysville. In Volume 2, we pick up the action at Marysville, Kansas, the crew change point for this 228-mile stretch of heavy-duty railroading, and follow it east to Kansas City.

The traffic is bustling and train meets are plentiful as up to sixty trains a day work across the single-tracked portion of the line. At Topeka, the action gets even better. Southern Pacific's "Cotton Rock" line shares track with Union Pacific from here to Kansas City. The final sixty-seven miles are all double track and the trains race along the bottomlands of the Kansas River.

Heavy coal trains, drag freights, and fast intermodal trains ply the line. UP's newest motive power is on display, with both GE and EMD "AC" diesels on the point of many trains. Unit coal trains are seen operating with distributed power, and visiting diesels from other railroads are viewed heading up other trains. Glorious scenery and high-density action fill the screen in this exciting tour of Union Pacific's Marysville Subdivision Volume 2!

Union Pacific Marysville Sub. Vol. # 2 continues where Vol. # 1 leaves off. From the town of Marysville Kansas to Kansas City, we see a great variety of trains. Coal is a huge commodity being moved from Powder River Wyoming. From Topeka Kansas on, the Southern Pacific joins the action. Along the way is a lot of quite farm land & towns, dotted with the agricultural structures that serve the communities. An excellent production by Pentrex.

Pentrex brings a rural country route to life with heavy tonnage action. Scenery is varied and appealing which adds to the visual enjoyment. The rail action climbs and descends the landscape which is somewhat surprising in the farmlands of eastern Nebraska. Images were captured during the summer growing season so everything is green. More action upon arrival at the yard in Kansas City would have added greatly to this DVD.

What a pleasant surprise. I had no idea the area covered ( East-Central Nebraska to Kansas City ) had such interesting scenery and had intense level of RR activity. I took an instant liking to this from the get-go. It's all shot in good weather, and with really great sound: Deep bassy guttural exhaust rumbles yet without killing the treble. The area is surprisingly hilly and curvy in many places and the video crew(s) obviously made the best of their time spent there, and so we see train after train either climbing grades, often with helper units and just as often see them blasting at high speed through small hamlets in a great show. Lots of meets too. Most often the entire train is shown, which is my personal preference, but due to the quick passing the action does not drag for those it's not. Camera work, as well as video quality is superb; classic Pentrex: They know when to zoom in or zoom out, or when to pan, or just to leave the camera steady and watch a roll-by and maximze the effects of the scenery or lineside "props". Narration is the best example of how it should be done: It's long before the train nears and/or after the power passes and so doesn't spoil the best sounds. Lots of info given as far as train origin/destination, explanation of what's happening, power and it's disposition or history, lineside towns or landmarks and in an informative and articulate/well spoken style, Sometimes humorous too as they comment on the lineside wildlife. Volume 1 seems slightly more fast paced overall than volume 2 but volume 2's extended switching and mainline sequence in Topeka Kansas shows lots of variety of different railroads and power, and the fast action between there and Kansas City shows plenty of SP freights too. I was glad to see plenty of older EMD & GE units as well. This is now one of my favorite pair of RR videos.

A nice two volume set for your collection. Photography narration and graphics are top quality just what you have come to expect from Penterx. Train coverage is great with most trains being shown from locomotives through out the whole train. Filmed around 1997 there's lots of classic SD40-2's and C30-7's along with the latest power at that time AC4400's AC6000's and SD90Mac's are new and super clean. The DVD's covers the Marysville Sub starting at Gibbion Jct Nebraska to Kansas City there's some nice coverage of other railroads that run on UP trackage in Topeka and Kansas City.
