On May 17, 1953, the first official steam excursion on the Union Pacific Railroad was sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Railroad Club. The trip ran from Denver, Colorado to Laramie, Wyoming and returned via Sherman Hill. Locomotive No. 3967, a coal burning Challenger equipped with "elephant ear" smoke deflectors, powered this pioneering excursion.

To commemorate the 40th anniversary of this historic event, the Rocky Mountain Railroad Club sponsored a re-creation of the event on May 15, 1993. Wearing new number plates and sporting elephant ears, Challenger 3985 became locomotive 3967 for a day. This sold-out excursion train, with almost 500 people aboard, retraced the original route of the 1953 journey.

Pentrex was there to provide you with complete coverage of this historic event. You'll see the ferry moves between Cheyenne and Denver, and you'll watch as photo run-bys are provided for passengers while the train climbs Sherman Hill. Aboard the train, we'll talk with several passengers who rode that first UP excursion in 1953. For the high point of our trip, we take a cab ride between Laramie and Speer as the train battles the grades of the original line over Sherman Hill.

In May 1993, Union Pacific Challenger 3985 pulled the special anniversary of the original trip which occurred on May 17, 1953 and it ran from Denver, Colorado to Laramie, Wyoming and return over Sherman Hill sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Railroad Club. Day One, the 3985 traveled from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Denver, Colorado. During a layover, the challenger locomotive masquerading to the 3967 which pulled the original excursion run 40 years before. Day Two, 3967 pulled the train taking the same route from Denver to Laramie and return with almost 500 passengers who paid their tickets to ride with photo-runbys and interviews from passengers who rode the original train. On the return to Denver, Pentrex had an onboard camera with Engineer Steve Lee and Fireman Lynn Nystrom. Day Three, the challenger was once more Masquerade to a new number; 3718. If 3985 would’ve been converted from coal to oil during it’s career, it would’ve been the 3718. In addition to Pentrex, Mark 1 Video was the only other cameraman for the excursion. Mark 1 Video, however, tells the story of the original trip in 1953 and they interview Steve Lee about the masquerading locomotive. Afterwards, the 3718 heads home to Cheyenne. Arriving home, the locomotive temporarily numbers were removed and the 3985 would once again reclaim her own identity. Great show to watch but sadly, there are no chapters on it. You have to watch the video in one chapter just like VHS days. 3985 thrilled fans who loved steam locomotives and 3985 was once my favorite. Unfortunately today, the challenger has been retired due to it’s poor mechanical condition and Big Boy 4014 is now the world’s largest operating steam locomotive.

Once released in the great American scenic railroads box set, this is still one of the most popular pentrex videos ever made. There are still some strange highlights but you'll see what I mean.
