During the 1950s, steam ruled the Union Pacific fleet. From the smaller 0-6-0s to the giant Big Boys, these workhorses were the backbone of an empire. Step back in time and savor the sights of steam on the UP in three different shows originally released as part of the Video Rails Classic Collector's Series. Combined on this DVD are:
Union Pacific Big Boys (30 Minutes)
Charge out of Cheyenne and Laramie and blast up Sherman hill with these kings of steam-the largest, heaviest steam locomotives to ever run in the western U.S. You'll see spectacular scenes of Big Boy doubleheaders, some with UP turbines. The rare footage captured here is combined with original sound re-recorded in Hi-Fi Stereo to enhance your viewing and listening experience.
Union Pacific Challengers (30 Minutes)
Massive and fast, the Challengers successfully conquered the entire Union Pacific system, operating through every type of terrain. Enjoy exciting pacing sequences, dramatic helper scenes, shots of Challengers running with turbines and diesels in Weber and Echo canyons, and spectacular views of Challengers pulling freight on Sherman Hill and in the Wasatch Mountains.
Union Pacific Steam (30 Minutes)
Here are the smaller and medium sized steam locomotives that performed a major part of the work on the UP system. See 0-6-0s, 2-8-0s, 2-8-2s, and 2-10-2s moving freight along branchlines and in yards. Witness UP's mighty 4-8-4 Northerns racing across Nebraska. These and other unique scenes pay rich tribute to Union Pacific's steam heritage.

A nice collection of vintage films with informative narration. I did especially appreciate the part with smaller steam locomotives as I have not seen so much of them before. The Big Boy and Challenger parts are both great with many nice vintage views.

I really enjoyed the DVD. Just watching those Big Boys and the Challengers made me want to see them run again. I had the priviledge of riding a U.P. excursion train pulled by the Challenger back in 2002. A great experience. I also rode with the 844 Northern a couple years ago. Maybe that's why I enjoyed the DVD so much.

I purchased this DVD on sale for 9.95. Good value. The video itself is old footage of the UP. The footage is not the most exciting footage but I think valuable.

This is a great DVD on UP steam locomotives. It gives a great history of the steam locomotives used by the Union Pacific Railroad all the way up to the 4-8-8-4 Big Boys. The footage is older footage but is well done in this DVD. The Big Boy action was my favorite but, the Challengers are just as impressive as the Big Boys in my opinion. I definitely recommend this DVD for your collection and it's worth every penny if you're a big steam buff. If you can't get your hands on the Pentrex "Big Boys" Collection, this is the next best thing and it's also the excellent quality of Pentrex videos we've come to expect over the years.

This DVD is overflowing with classic film of dozens of UP steam locomotives in great western settings. The locos are arranged by size and type and a generous separate section is devoted to each configuration with numerous examples of the different variations - all steaming through gorgeous Utah scenery and shuffling around picturesque yards. From little switchers to the massive Big Boys - this show has amazing archival images and railroad atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Video Rails again produces award-winning quality in this classic three 30-minute segments documenting Union Pacific's steam operations. I really enjoyed this DVD, especially the section on the Big Boys. The Challengers are also very wonderful, too. Also included are UP's smaller steam locomotives, such as 0-6-0's. I recommend this DVD to anyone interested in steam in its glory days. It truly is a masterpiece.

With Mike Bergers beautiful narration, this 3 in 1 combo contains incredible steam action on one of Americas superpower railroads. If you dont know about this one, it is revealed that The big boys were in 1988 as volume 2, the challengers in 1990 as volume 4, and the steam power, was from 1991 as volume 6.
