Union Pacific 4014 - Year of the Big Boy - Vol. 1
The Great Race to Ogden

In 2019 the Union Pacific Railroad accomplished what for many years seemed impossible when 'Big Boy' locomotive #4014 moved under steam for the first time in almost 60 years. This was the steam event of 2019, and thousands of people flocked to Cheyenne, WY to see the Big Boy run. This program starts with the test run to Nunn, CO on May 2nd, just two days before #4014 was to depart Cheyenne for a trip to Ogden, UT. This first trip, dubbed "The Great Race to Ogden," was a doubleheader with 4-8-4 #844 to commemorate 150th anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike and the completion of the original Transcontinental Railroad.

We'll follow the entire trip to Ogden and then back to Cheyenne, with a number of unique vantage points along the 'Overland Route' - Union Pacific's mainline across the Continental Divide. You'll see the Big Boy climbing Sherman Hill in both directions, racing across the high desert of Wyoming, and ascending the Wasatch grade through Echo Canyon - the very section of railroad the Big Boy locomotives were designed to conquer. You'll also see the celebration in Ogden, with #4014 and #844 meeting nose-to-nose in a modern recreation of the original ceremony at Promontory, UT.

The video covers 11 days of operation:

May 2nd - Cheyenne, WY to Nunn, CO
May 4th - Cheyenne, WY to Rawlins, WY
May 5th - Rawlins, WY to Rock Springs, WY
May 6th - Rock Springs, WY to Evanston, WY
May 8th - Evanston, WY to Ogden, UT
May 9th - 150th Anniversary Celebration in Ogden
May 12th - Ogden, UT to Evanston, WY
May 13th - Evanston, WY to Rock Springs, WY
May 16th - Rock Springs, WY to Rawlins, WY
May 17th - Rawlins, WY to Laramie, WY
May 19th - Laramie, WY to Cheyenne, WY
Filmed entirely in HD, this program features complete coverage of #4014's first trip, including climbing all the significant grades between Cheyenne and Ogden. You'll see the Big Boy working hard, especially during the return trip as the crew became more confident in the locomotive after breaking it in on the way to Ogden. This program has minimal narration (with the option to turn it on or off) and no distracting music.

In addition to the standard widescreen DVD, this program is also available on HD Blu-ray disc.

The Great Race Across the Midwest

Union Pacific 'Big Boy' #4014 returned to the rails again in July, this time heading east from the steam shop in Cheyenne, WY on a tour of the upper Midwest. While the "Great Race to Ogden" was a doubleheader with 4-8-4 #844, this tour was the first solo trip for #4014. Our coverage begins in Omaha, NE as the "Big Boy" pulled a one-way public excursion east to Boone, IA as a fundraiser for the Union Pacific Museum in Council Bluffs.

After the public excursion to Boone, #4014 traveled north through Iowa on the former Rock Island 'Spine Line' to St. Paul, MN. The Big Boy then continued to Duluth, MN utilizing BNSF trackage rights - the first time any UP steam locomotive has visited the Twin Ports. You'll see #4014 crossing the impressive Kettle River bridge in Sandstone, MN before meeting Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range 2-8-0 #332 at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth. We'll cover both days of the 'Festival of Steam' in Duluth, including #332 pulling short trains along the waterfront, before following #4014 back to the Twin Cities. This program concludes with #4014 traveling east for 2 days across Wisconsin on the former Chicago and North Western line to Milwaukee and Chicago.

The Great Race Across the Southwest

In late September, Union Pacific 'Big Boy' #4014 embarked on the third and final tour of 2019: "The Great Race Across the Southwest." We'll follow the Big Boy south from Las Vegas into California, as #4014 returned to the Golden State for the first time since being restored to operation. You'll see the locomotive climbing Cima Hill and passing through Afton Canyon, before utilizing BNSF trackage rights over Cajon Pass to reach the Los Angeles area. Then we'll cover the 2 public excursions for the RailGiants Museum over Cajon, before following #4014 east on the former Southern Pacific 'Sunset Route.' You'll see #4014 climb Beaumont Hill, travel through the Salton Sink, and cross the Colorado River into Arizona.
