From October to November 2011, Union Pacific's New Mexico/Arizona Tour, headed by venerable steam locomotive #844, traveled on a grand loop throughout the southwest to participate in the festivities leading up to the 100th anniversary of statehood New Mexico and Arizona would celebrate in the year to come. Pentrex was on hand to cover the exciting southern portion of the journey from Alamogordo, New Mexico to Las Vegas, Nevada, capturing the powerful Northern and its 8-car Special as it stopped for servicing and to join in the Centennial celebrations at cities along the route.

We follow the Special, with Heritage unit number 1996 in the consist to provide extra horsepower and dynamic braking as needed, south from Alamogordo to El Paso, Texas, and then back into New Mexico for stops at Deming and Lordsburg. Once in Arizona, the train is greeted by long trestles, surviving water tanks from the SP era, and even an old classic cantilever signal as it travels to Tucson, Phoenix, and other cities where it's enjoyed by throngs of enthusiastic visitors. Leaving Yuma, it continues into California, on its way to West Colton. It later steams over Cajon Pass to reach Las Vegas, Nevada, where our coverage ends.

The UP steam team did a magnificent job keeping the big 4-8-4 in tiptop shape during the tour. There are some 'firsts' for this excursion: the first time a steam train utilized the Keenbrook crossover; the first time one has worked the Colton/Palmdale cutoff in 22 years, and the first time much of the Sunset Route has seen a steam-powered train in nearly thirty years. Whether it was thundering through the vast deserts of New Mexico and Arizona or powering up the stiff grades of California, UP 844 looked majestic and awe-inspiring. Follow its journey with us and experience the thrill of UP 844's New Mexico/Arizona Centennial Special for yourself!

In a word, BORING. Apparently Pentrex did not catch the repeated narration in chapter 8. I expect better from Pentrex.

Additional remarks by TRAINMASTER:
Narration: Could have used more.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
Image quality: Excellent!
DVD Value: Overpriced for the amount of enjoyment I got out of it.
Recommend to others? Not unless they REALLY were interested in the subject matter.

2011 was probably not the greatest excursion run. Couldve been a little bit better than it wouldve been.

Additional remarks by Ron Harber:
Narration: Just enough.

A good show overall. Yes, there is one audio goof, but I watched the second time with narration turned off, so it wasn't an issue. Good coverage with some history and operational info thrown in, which makes it more interesting than the usual "here it comes...there it goes" flavor on some programs. Good image quality, looks like they sweated the details on the video anyway.

Narration: Just enough.

The picture seemed a little hazy to me but it could have been in the sky as I know up in the mts it is always hazy. Otherwise they did a very good job of making it more interesting that just watching runby after runby by doing other things and anouncing what they were showing you. With the ability to turn off the audio was great an no music to mask the natural sounds of the engine or whatever we were looking at.

Additional remarks by Dave Roxin:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? Maybe.
Image quality: Good.
DVD Value:: Fair.
Recommend to others? Yes.

I enjoyed this video. Lots of runbys of the Engine, clean HD Footage, and great audio. Despite the one audio glitch, it was a nice program. Hoping to possibly catch the engine in person one day.

Narration: Just enough.

Good job overall. I wish there had been more information given about the locomotive itself rather than mini-travelogues about the states it was passing through. I bought the standard definition DVD, and later the Blu-ray. Both look very good indeed.

I was excited to find this video on eBay as we had a chance to drive to Benson AZ to see 844 up close in 2012. It was a great morning. But I was so disappointed that there was absolutely no coverage of the stop in Benson! There were hundreds of people that came out to see 844, and it's too bad that was not documented. I'm new to "train" videos, so perhaps my critique is off, but it would have been good to have a little more coverage of the stops the 844 made in this segment of the trip in 2012. I'm still glad I bought the video as seeing 844 in Benson was a highlight of the year for us.

I've seen 844 a few times and chased it when it came to the Sacto Railfair. A good addition to the other dvd's and videos of great steam trains still alive.
