Norfolk Southern's Pocahontas District recently had clearances raised for double stacks as part of the Heartland Project. Elkhorn grade between Bluefield and Iaeger is the steepest part of the Pokey, giving even NS's latest SD70ACe's a workout with heavy coal trains as they wind through the valleys and through the small towns of West Virginia. This is helper country, with two to three units pushing heavy trains up the grades.

This is for sure one of the best DVDs produced on the Pokey! If your a fan of the old N&W or contemporary coal country railroading, this DVD is for you. It could have used more narration to better inform viewers of the train and location.

Unlike the other two reviewers, I thought this DVD/Blue Ray stunk. If you like very, very slow moving trains of hopper cars this is for you. And it seemed you get to see the whole train pass by at 5 or 10 mph. There was precious little narrative and what there was, was incomplete IMO. If not obvious I like things explained as to how and why and this one didn't deliver on those counts. Nothing wrong with the quality of the photos (I watched in Blue Ray) but that's about the only good thing I can say about this one. Even in the previews, the title was given then clips were shown without a single word of narrative.

15 years since Highball made "The Pokey, Norfolk Southern's Pocahontas Division" and the changes are .. more traffic with the ability to move double stacks over the line now. And the power has improved with EMD's SD70ACe's . A great improvement for moving the heavy coal drags. Narration could have been better, but still a great production .
