The Sierra Nevada is hit hard by fierce Winter storms dumping up to 35 feet of snow each Winter season. Storms on the summit can be treacherous and can take even the most experienced and prepared travelers by surprise.

One of the most daunting tasks for the railroad is keeping the tracks clear of snow and ice.

Dispatched at any time, day or night, Flanger trains are called to duty when storms produce a depth of snow six inches or more above the rail. Flanger operations require skilled and experienced operators who know this mountainous territory well. Operations work around the clock until the storm subsides.

See first hand, unprecedented footage as we climb aboard the lead unit of a Flanger train in operation, and make a flip from Truckee to Emigrant Gap and back clearing the snow for mainline rail traffic!

First class production however as a person who lives in the UK I wish that you had included some of the communication between the crew & control viewed from inside the locomotive cab. I will never be in a position to see the rail network outside the UK thereby enabling the crew time to enhance the production by relating there personal experiences of Flanger operations would compliment this and future productions.

This is a nice ride-along in the cab of a Southern Pacific GP38-2. Though most of the units are "patched", most still carry their original SP paint and lettering. The vast majority of this video is shot using a hard mounted and very steady camera looking forward through the rotating disc of the clear view screen in front of the engineer while crew and radio chatter can be heard throughout--however the crew are not wearing microphones and are not directing nor are they trying to speak specifically towards the viewers. There are some other in-cab shots and a brief look inside the cabin of the flanger too.

The best scenes of flying snow are shown as the flanger set is westbound up the grade out of Truckee. Some really great views are taken from the side windows of the cab and the walkways of the locomotives and even from onboard the flanger with the camera held below the unit as it does it's thing! There are also some ground shots as the flanger set rolls by with snow flying from the plow of the lead unit and the flanger blade. And the very throaty sounds of the GP38-2's from both inside and outside are very impressive and intoxicating to this diesel fan!

I think this was shot in late 2003 or early 2004 with a copyright date of 2004, before the HD camera and GoPro era. That being said, the video quality is pretty good and camera work and production are professional. Occasional on screen descriptions give location and some interesting information, but there is no narration. Now a new version with modern camera and audio gear should be made...just sayin'!

I'm really into snow plows, so this was very interesting to me. I would rather watch a snow plow however, but this was an interesting related subject with lesser amounts of snow to remove. Quality of picture was fine, as was the overall layout of the video.
