The Texas State Railroad
Deep in the Piney Woods of East Texas, the hard working steam locomotives of the Texas State Railroad put on thrilling performances. With their stacks barking out steady cadences, the toiling engines carry their passenger trains uphill and down, across 25 miles of picturesque terrain between the towns of Palestine and Rusk. The stations and trains of this scenic tourist railroad are based at both ends of the line and its operating schedules are designed, among other features, to provide exciting mid-route train meets.

Pentrex traveled to the Texas State Railroad in 1999 to capture an in-depth view of the its operations. The stars of this show are Baldwin Consolidation #300 and a former Santa Fe Pacific-type engine, #500. Great trackside and onboard photography showcases these classic steamers and their vintage passenger equipment. We ll take you into the cab where the engineer and fireman battle the steep grades and severe curves of this backwoods country. You ll see them at work and hear them explain how they meet the challenge. A visit to the shop area finds steam locomotives, vintage freight cars, and several classic diesels on display, along with the highly esteemed Texas & Pacific 610, the only surviving example of the mammoth 2-10-4 T&P Texas-type locomotives. The historic Texas State Railroad, in its setting of woodland beauty, draws visitors from around the world. Here is your opportunity to enjoy your own private tour!

This is a fine dvd to own about the Texas State Railroad - it is your typical tourist railroad video, showing two active steam locomotives pulling trains over the line. It includes footage of some of the other locomotives on the roster, both steam and diesel, as well as interviews, cab footage, and even a look at T&P #610 being pulled out of the shop. I'd definitely recommend this dvd to railfans and steam lovers interested in a good look at the Texas State Railroad.

I wanted to watch this dvd because I'm interested in riding the train in the near future. I think the dvd accurately portrayed the railroad, but it certainly lacks excitement and scenery. The railroad information is fine, but not outstanding. Would only recommend to railfans with a particular interest in Texas railroad history and/or steam locomotives.

Additional remarks by rmccallay:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? Maybe.
Image quality: Good.
DVD Value: Overpriced for the amount of enjoyment I got out of it.
Recommend to others? Not unless they REALLY were interested in the subject matter.

This 1999 Pentrex video is a must have for steam lovers, as there are plenty of runbys, shop tours, and close up looks on the main engines 500 & 300. Coincidentally, number 500 was one of the couple Santa Fe Steamers that was operating into the present Decade along with 3751 from Southern California, 3415 on the Abilene & Smoky Valley in Kansas, and Proposed plans to bring back 2926 in operation in Albuquerque.

Additional remarks by Steamboy:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? Yes.
Image quality: Excellent!
DVD Value:: Fair.
Recommend to others? A "Must Have"!
