There is not much quite as awesome as the spectacle of a rotary snow plow and the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad still operates a steam powered rotary. Join us for an amazing two day visit to the famed 64 mile narrow gauge line as steam-powered rotary OY clears the upper reaches of the line for the first time in a decade.

It is a magical combination of spectacular mountain railroading and steam power as two 2-8-2 locomotives shove the chugging plow in a blizzard of 5 foot drifts at the summit of 10,000 foot Cumbres Pass. We'll see the first passenger train make it through the newly cleared pass. History is alive and works hard on the Cumbres & Toltec!

On Saturday May 4-Sunday May 5, 1991, the C&TS have recently restored and revised Rotary Snowplow OY to clear the line for the railroads 1991 season for the very first time since 1983. Besides pentrex, there are some other noteworthy railroad video producers visiting there (Greg Scholl, Les Jarrett, etc), as this operation was on the same weekend the California State Railroad Museum in Old Sacramento hosted Railfair 91 from Friday May 3 to Sunday May 12. Engines 487 and 488 did a great job of shoving the plow through the rockies, despite trying to dodge through the heavy snowbank at windy point for about 45 minutes.
