This cab ride series covers Amtrak #3, the westbound "Southwest Chief", from Needles, CA to the train's western terminus in Los Angeles, CA filmed on March 15, 1999 on P42 Locomotive #33.

Volume 1 covers Needles, CA to Siberia, CA. Highlights include the climb over Goffs Hill from Needles to Goffs and passing the Arizona & California junction at Cadiz.

Volume 2 covers Sibera, CA to Barstow, CA. Highlights include the climb over Ash Hill and passing the Union Pacific's LA and Salt Lake Route at Daggett.

Volume 3 covers Barstow, CA to San Bernardino, CA. Highlights include: traversing the entire Cajon Subdivision, a station stop in Victorville, and the climb over Cajon Pass leaving Victorville.

Volume 4 covers San Bernardino, CA to Los Angeles, CA. Highlights include: traversing the entire San Bernardino Subdivision, Santa Ana Canyon shortly after leaving Riverside, a station stop @ Fullerton, and meeting 3 Metrolink commuter trains (the last one having a Metrolink mid-train helper!) between Fullerton and Los Angeles, passing former Santa Fe's Hobart Yard, and LAUPT.

This is an incredible DVD set. Seeing the desert scenery and Cajon Pass in the cab of a locomotive is always fascinating. The narration is just about right so as not to ruin the scenes with useless yackety yak and it gets to not only the points of interest but introduces the crew members and from time to time gives a shot or two of the cab interior. The actual sounds and radio communication make this a great DVD to watch over and over again. I also got a kick out of the two trainmen arguing over the radio as our train arrives San Bernardino. A fantastic video and a must have for Santa Fe railfans.

Narration: Just enough.

Filmed on One day During March 1999, this 4 part set features great desert scenery, as well as meets with BNSF Freights, and some Metrolink Commuter Trains into LA. Its really Rare to see the chief operating in the late morning sun because of unexpecting delays, making this visit really rare indeed. Usually at sunset & sunrise, but this 4 part set, Rare Late morning sun.

This is a good series of videos. However I think it would be a little more interesting if you could hear more of the conversations in the cab.
