In the winter of 1987 we ventured to Canada to capture some incredible railroad action. Stratford, Ontario is our base as we enjoy some plow runs on the branch lines that Canadian National (CN) owned. These lines only saw sporadic freight runs, thus when the winds blew the snow around, the railroad quickly became covered to the point a snow plow extra had to be dispatched to clear the line. Quantity of snow is not the problem, it is the wind, causing drifting, which fills the cuts and valleys. Powering the CN plow is a pair of Canadian National first generation F7s along with the orange snowplow. We'll see how the plow is operated, and even get a short ride inside as they plow a siding. First, we catch a run to Wingham, Ontario. On this run we record one of our signature video shots, as we get pummeled by the flying snow. This scene landed on a TV blooper show many years ago. After the thrill of plowing the Wingham line, the next day a freight run is made to Wingham, and the crew granted our request by running the F7s instead of the usual GP9. A couple of days later the plow is called again to clear the entire line north to Owen Sound, and finally another trip to Wingham, where the plow derails clearing a siding. This video has some incredible snowfighting scenes, as the plow roars into the snow-covered areas to make the snow fly. Clouds of snow are blasted with shear force. Unusual railroad action! Videotaped in 1987, re-edited, and updated in 2004. Now 65 minutes. Now available in DVD. Greg Scholl Video Productions

When I saw this movie at the local Hobby Shop, I knew that I had to have it.
Years ago, I was a dairy farm herdsman only 8 miles north of Wingham Ontario at the time I met the lady whom I later married (an Owen Sound Ontario native). I knew that the lines noted in this movie were long gone.
This movie has some of the little coverage of the region in Mid-Western Ontario railroading, before the CNR and CPR abandoned many non main lines. What a treat I had viewing this movie to see F7's in action, espescially behind Snowplows. Seen also is a re-railment caused be the heavy amounts of snow in the lea of Lake Huron.
This movie was not a disappointment. Whether you know the region or not, it's Snowplows hard at work in areas that winter storms regularly close highways from November to March. Greg Scholl has done a fine job covering the territory considering the weather conditions.
This is a movie that belongs in railfan's collection. Many non railfan's also enjoy it as I have learnt when loaning the movie to friends.

Keep in mind that The 2004 re-edited version contains the extended and deleted scenes not seen in the original 1987 Tape. There are also lots of color correction, and still no word about the blooper at Milverton crossing. Not to mention the letter C missing in Greg's Last Name on The Front Cover.

Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? Yes.
Image quality: Excellent!
DVD Value:: Fair.
Recommend to others? A "Must Have"!
