The Back Page
Do you like the "chugging" nature of four-cycle diesel power? This issue offers the U34CH as well as Alco/ MLW power on NY&PA and D-L. The end of Chapter One and start of the second allows one to compare the Amtrak Genesis with NJT GEs. My Chatham NJ home was one block from the station of the electrified Morris & Essex Lackawanna (E-L / Conrail / NJT) Morristown line. In quiet late evening when windows were open, a soft rising hum of departing trains was a common sound. Other than through trains, or the local freight (usually with an RS3 which paused most evenings by the station to pick up waybills), it was the U34s which were the loudest, if only occasional, intruders. The night air seemed to magnify the exhaust with its notable crack. At first, only one GE served Chatham: 7:22pm east-bound, in push mode. In 1971 this provided me with an excuse to walk over to the station after demise of the "Lake Cities" which, until 1969, had roared west . at 7:42. Thanks to Mark Balkin for recording these!
