Heavy Railroad Action Around the "Iron City"
Imagine a place where the railroading includes mountain helper districts, long tunnels, countless bridges, triple track mainlines, heavy industrial switching, an active interlocking tower, and well over a hundred trains a day! That's Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, one of the busiest railroading centers in America, with possibly the widest variety of operations to be found in a single region.
The last months of Conrail's Pittsburgh routes were captured just prior to Norfolk Southern's takeover in 1999. "Big Blue" provided enough traffic to keep any railfan happy. CSX played an equally important role in this region and you'll find plenty of dramatic CSX action. Plus, the heavy-industrial-hauling Union Railroad also contributed exciting scenes. You'll see switchers toiling in a massive steel mill, Amtrak passenger trains on the mainlines, an unusual coal-hauling railroad, and even freight barges on the rivers around the city. Here's your opportunity to experience heavy-duty railroading during several seasons of the year as we tour the best spots around the "Three Rivers City" before the 1999 mergers that changed the face of the area's operations.

This video has it all - mountain helper districts, tunnels and high bridges. But wait! This is supposed to be about Pittsburgh PA. If you have not been to Pittsburgh, you have not seen the ups and downs and ins and outs of big city railroading on an incredible maze of tracks in what used to be the steel capitol of the world.

The video starts out with a description of the downtown area with an overview of the skyline and bridges crossing the three rivers. This video covers Conrail, CSX and the Union Railroad. Highlights include the URR hot slab steel trains, Dravosburg, Port Perry and Schenley Tunnels some unusual back-up moves on the URR at Port Perry Bridge, McKeesport, The Edgar Thompson Steel plant, and 1950s video of operations at the long ago abandoned Carrie Furnace Iron Works and the Jones and Laughlin Steel Mill and an unexpected (for me) surprise involving some interesting fireworks.

Narration and photography are both very good. The volume is unusually low on this DVD. The kids probably will get bored quickly with this video due to the mostly slow moving trains. This video is a Must have for Conrail fans. I found it particularly enjoyable for the coverage of areas that I have not previously seen on railroad videos.

Great footage from the Pittsburgh rail corridors.
with earlier footage and commentaries on the Pittsburgh steel industry.
Mainly CSX and Conrail action, some great shots of the various types
of industrial trains that worked the surviving mills, and industries
of the PB area. Oh yeah also some great footage of locals, and through trains,
xing the steel truss bridge's that span the Monongahela River.
Top industrial rail movie.

This is my 1st purchase of a DVD with content on eastern railroads and I'm glad I added this to my collection. I had no idea the Pittsburgh area had so much rail traffic? This DVD is full of action and highly detailed about railroading in that part of the country. The quality is excellent, sound, images and scenery are unbelievable! I highly recommend this DVD as part of any railfan's collection and it's my opinion this is definitely a "Must Have" DVD in your library of videos.

Thanks to its geography,Pittsburgh has a fascinating railroad system with its bridges, tunnels and gradients.
This DVD was filmed before the Conrail takeover in 1999 and shows Conrail, CSX and Union Railroad at work throughout the city. The variety of scenes is great.
Living in the U.K's premier steel city, what really makes the dvd great for me is how it shows the Pittburgh steel industry's relationship with the railroads.
I only wish the producers would revisit sometime and bring the story up to date.
Highly recommended.

Amtrak, Conrail, NS, CSX & shortline action all make up the railrailing in this video. Pittsburgh is an interesting city as it is along the Allegheny Mountains, and has 3 rivers in the city. The steel mills has a major influence on railroading here at one time and the action is city railroading at it's finest. There is so much to see with the railroads and it is well represented in this video right at the time that Conrail was becoming a fallen flag. Excellent video.
