Transit) in action during her last days of regular service. We open at South Amboy, N.J. at 6:30 a.m. the 4877 is shown in detail lined up in the MU yard with three other GG-1's behind her. Also seen is eastbound N.J. Transit train no.5306 (an F40PH push-pull) with seven cars passing by, an ex-Amtrak E-60 electric arriving on train no.3303, two N.J.T. diesels off train no.3312 head for the pit as a GG-1 departs with a train for New York City. Then we get aboard a GG-1, observing close up details of the interior and soon we are on our way over the former New York & Long Branch Railroad, over the Raritan Draw Bridge, pass "Wood" tower and onto the former P.R.R. Perth Amboy And Woodbridge Branch to Rahway ("Union Tower") where we are switched to the former P.R.R. main line passing "Elmora", "Lane" and "Hunter" towers (with a stop at Elizabeth station) before arriving at Newark Station. After leaving Newark we pass over the "Dock" lift bridge (which spans the Passaic River) pass "Hudson" tower, then over the "Portal Draw" bridge (spanning the Hackensack River), and through the Jersey Meadowlands before entering the Hudson River Tunnels at Bergen, N.J. then emerging at "A" tower, Pennsylvania Station, New York City. We then travel to Amtrak's Wilmington Shops ( Wilmington, Delaware ) to observe many retired GG-1 engines in detail. |
