In the fall of 2023, Norfolk & Western 4-8-4 #611 operated a series of mainline excursions in Virginia - the first such trips in over six years. Dubbed the "Shenandoah Valley Limited", these half-days trips ran over a 35-mile portion of the former Chesapeake and Ohio Mountain Subdivision, now operated by the Buckingham Branch Railroad. This was an ideal situation for #611, as the "Queen of Steam" got to run over a new and scenic route while still staying close to her home at the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke.
Beginning in October, #6l1 ran for five straight weekends with two half-day trips every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The excursions departed from the new Victoria Station in the small town of Goshen, with #6l1 climbing the steep North Mountain grade on the way to Staunton. With no place to turn on either end of the line, two Buckingham Branch diesels were used to pull the train back west to Goshen. The excursions ended up being a great success and after the last weekend of trips in early November, #6l| returned home to Roanoke.
