There should have been a lot more narration...especially such as what location are we at, time of day, some history of that area, what was the name of the crew, the train's number, tell us the engines' history, tell us about the cars. The music also was very wrong for this train video. Milwaukee Road in Montana DVD The Last Days of the Electrics rrtrupr0316 (Southern Montana) on 2011-04-20 07:16:20.

Excellent footage of Milwaukee Electrics at points-of-view and locations that few other videos have shown. Milwaukee Road in Montana DVD The Last Days of the Electrics Jeffrey Ornstein (Brooklyn, NY) on 2011-03-21 15:56:24.

I'll watch anything with a pantograph or a third rail. So when this dvd was on sale a little while back, I grabbed a copy. For the most part, I enjoyed the images of the "Little Joes" as they traversed the Montana landscape. There's some nice views of the electric locos up close, so you can examine the interesting details they carried. The image quality varied, but for the most part, was a little fuzzier than I would have liked. It looks like if the films were not brought forward now, they would probably soon disintegrate and disappear forever. On the plus side, C-Vision did a good job in color and contrast correction. Some of the scenes show the locomotives at a far distance - but it's the closest the photographers could have gotten to the trains, given the topography. Musical score was good; but perhaps some more variety could have been implemented. A map or two could have been helpful. Also, narration was actually somewhat lacking; maybe some "storytelling" could have been added to inform the viewer of the history of the unique electrification of the line shown (and to break up the music at times). All in all, a good DVD for Milwaukee or electric fans. Not perfect, but certainly not bad, either. Excellent DVD of a period of railroading that was so much different than the present time. Little Joes will never go out of style. Thanks Chris for releasing this fine DVD. Milwaukee Road in Montana DVD The Last Days of the Electrics Crunch (S. E. Minnesota) on 2011-03-07 16:51:01.
Anything doing with the Milwaukee is of interest to me. I grew up a block from the main line in SE MN. I watched the slow change over to diesel in my home area and saw The streamliner Hiawathe #2 on it's maiden trip. During my travels in the 40's, 50's and 60's it was my pleasure to ride electrically powered Milwaukee trains in Washington- Montana area. I enjoy your work with the short videos and watch all of them. |
