MRL MONTANA MAINLINE PART 2: Helena to Sandpoint
In MRL Montana Mainline Part 2, we return to Helena in the dead of winter as trains prepare to do battle with Mullan Pass. A strong Canadian storm system slammed into the Rockies sending the mercury below zero while a quintet of MRL's EMD SD70ACe's put on a fantastic show shoving heavy trains to the summit. This is a mountain railroading at its best with 2.2% grades, numerous curves and high trestles.
Shot in January and July of 2011, you will see the MRL taking on Mullan Pass in all types of weather as it climbs to the continental divide at Blossburg via the famous Mullan Tunnel. The action doesn't stop there, as trains race west along the 3rd, 4th and 10th subdivisions through the fantastic scenery that is the hallmark of Montana. Catch trains as they follow the course of the Clark Fork River and scale high above the treetops on Evaro Hill. Our tour concludes as we head west through the Bitterroot Mountains along the banks of the Clark Fork to Sandpoint, Idaho where MRL joins BNSF's busy "Funnel."
A great variety of trains run over the line including coal, grain, mixed manifests and MRL's daily gas train. From perfect sunny skies, through thunderstorms and winter's arctic chill, this is a trip to MRL country you won't soon forget! Raw horsepower and beautiful scenery combine again for two great hours of entertainment.

These are great DVDs and you have the option of narration on or off. If i had to list a dissapointing part of this show is that i thought it would have shown a lot more MRL action, The show is sold as MRL and you would have thought you were getting a program based solely on MRL but it has a lot of BNSF trains in the show. The beauty of it is that you get the latest BNSF horsepower working hard along with some older EMDs from MRL as well as their fleet of SD70's. Besides the fact that i would have liked to see a lot more MRL trains, these are excellent DVDs and i wouldnt hesitate recommending them, they can be watched and enjoyed over and over again and the footage dosnt become boring as multiple locations are featured and the scenery is great. A must have for MRL and BNSF fans.

Those programs are the best products form 7Idea!
I have other two programs from Pentrex about MRL, but those are the best ones: 5/5 - To be still better, maybe have a little cab-ride scenes!
I suggest that you buy the two programs!

I ended up owning this Blu ray quite by accident. It was not one that I thought I would have any interest in and did not have it on my list of 7Idea discs to purchase in the future. I purchased the 7Idea Kicking Horse Pass Blu Ray however and discovered that although the case and stenciling on the top of that disc said that it was the Kicking Horse Pass Blu-Ray, it apparently slipped through the 7Idea QC cracks and was instead the MRL Part 2 Blu-Ray.
I was so taken by it immediately however that I decided to go ahead and keep it. While it indeed contains a considerable amount of BNSF compared to MRL action, other reviewers have noted that and explained it so I will leave it at that.
I found the footage to be engaging and of the highest quality. There were a considerable number of different locations and types of locomotives as well as a great variety of freight types, including Boeing 737 fuselages and giant wind turbine blades..obviously something you are unlikely to see in other railroad videos.
The videography of this disc is nothing short of stunning. The Blu-Ray makes it seem as if you were right there with the videographer. Not only are there panoramic shots which give you a great view of the trains, there are many close-ups which make it seem as if you could reach out and touch them. Even with a zoom lens, it looks as if it took considerable creativity.and risk.on the part of the videographer to get those shots.
There are also shots of yards, depots, bridges, trestles and geographical features and the Montana and Idaho scenery is varied and spectacular. At slightly over 2 hours, it is also an excellent value. This is one of the finest railroad videos of any type I have seen to date and I would consider it a must have for any railroad fan.

Simply an awesome set of DVD's on the MRL after watching both volumes I was ready to through my camera and gear in my truck and head off to Montana. Both volumes offer excellent photography interesting and informative narration and nice graphics. There's plenty to see form MRL's nice looking Ace's hauling every kind of train to monster coal trains with Ace's up front and helper sets of six to seven older EMD locomotivs, MRL's SD45's SD45-2 and SD-40 locomotives look and sound fantastic it was great to see the newest power mixed with these classic EMD locomotives. A+++++
