We had a delightful couple of days on KCS's fourth sub of the Gulf division. This is the north-south main line on the Arkansas-Oklahoma border over Rich Mountain. 6 axle power is the rule here, we saw SD40-2's, SD45's SD4OT-2's and SDSO's, plus some BN and Oakway run-through power on coal trains, all working hard on the grade. The tunnel motors really look spiffy in their nice new gray, red and yellow paint, and we caught several leading.

At the Arkansas-Oklahoma border, the Kansas City Southern crosses the summit of the Ouachita Mountains. The 13 mile long grade on Rich Mountain varies up to 1.5%. This is also the most scenic area of the KCS line between Kansas City and Shreveport LA. And most appropriately for this scenic area, this video is 16x9 Widescreen!

The video starts north of Heavener at MP334 with a unit grain train, and works it's way south to Rich Mountain. Most unit trains have one or two DPU helpers shoving on the rear end or mid-train. We see mostly grain and coal units trains, some manifest and intermodal trains. This is mostly a single track line with passing sidings, so there are very few rolling meets. Aside from the great scenery of the Ouachita National Forest, this video features several of KCS's new SD70ACe's and GE ES44AC Gevo's in the beautiful retro Southern Belle paint scheme. You will also see EMD's and GE's latest greatest on run-through UP and BNSF trains. And surprise! We are treated to a few matched set unit grain trains with the retro red, yellow and black paint scheme.

Narration is minimal, and there are location markers, but no train symbol markers. The photography is sharp, but there is haze in some scenes (and what you see is would you would get if you were there during the warmer months. This DVD is a Must Have for KCS fans as well as fans of the newest EMD and GE power. And the children might enjoy the brightly colored Southern Belle paint scheme.
