Jersey Diesels The U-Boats NJ Transit U34CHs DVD
This fine program presents the complete history of the NJ Transit U34CHs, the first commuter locomotives built with shaft-driven Head End Power (HEP).
Ordered by the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad to replace older diesels equipped with steam generators, these 3600 h.p. units were constructed by General Electric at their Erie, PA plant. Deliveries commenced in 1970. The 32 U34CHs employed 3430 h.p. for traction, while the remaining 170 h.p. powered the HEP generator to provide heating, lighting and air conditioning.
You'll see the U-boats in action on the Bergen County, Pascack Valley, Morristown and Boonton lines. Exciting trackside sequences are combined with in-cab, ChoochCam, snow and night scenes. Rare archival footage of Lackawanna and Erie steam and diesel power is also included. A memorable tribute to a truly historic locomotive!
