CSX's Sand Patch Grade in western Pennsylvania is one of the most popular railfanning sites in the eastern U.S. Heavy tonnage; high-density traffic and grueling mountain grades are trademarks of this famous former B&O route.

This production of Into the Allegheny Range Volume 4 was filmed by Iron Horse America over a three-year period during the mid 1990s. In it you'll see a multitude of trains at familiar landmarks as well as the rarely seen west slope, during all seasons of the year. Many of the locomotives are sporting their pre-CSX paint schemes from various predecessor railroads. You'll visit towers, tunnels, and obscure branch lines. Plus, you'll see the last train to ever run on the old Berlin Subdivision out of Garrett, Pennsylvania. You'll even ride on a pusher engine shoving an eastbound freight from Connellsville, Pennsylvania, up the west slope to the summit at Sand Patch. Enjoy the ultimate mountain railroading experience with Volume 4 of Into the Allegheny Range!

Excellent movie; but, you should have all four volumes to really enjoy the series. Perfect time in the growing CSX (early to mid 90's). Great photography, great narration and the quick subtitles really tell you about train movements. Where else can you see a SD-60 followed by a powered GP-30. All the merged railroads are well represented in their last paint scheme. No detail is left untouched. A must have.

I wish all rail videos were made this way. It makes intelligent railfanning from the home a pleasure. There is almost mile-by-mile coverage going in geographical sequence, plenty of well-drawn maps so you always know where you are, all trains are clearly identified, the forms of presentation are varied (closeup and distance shots, environs, even a cab ride on a pusher at the end). Interesting branch lines get brief coverage. Video is not HD quality, but excellent DVD quality for the time period (and a big improvement over the VHS, which I replaced with this DVD). With 2 discs, and over 4 hours of video plus previews, what's not to like? The whole 4-part series is excellent (I own them all).

Throughly enjoyed this and a must have if you like CSX in the early 90’s. The colorful autumn trainscapes on bright sunny days especially made this a joy to watch and rewatch. Loading half mile long rails into a string of drop end gondolas then moving them thru switches was amazing. The angles and quality throughout the presentation is top notch. Great purchase!

Years ago, I lived in southern Ontario Canada. It was only a 6 hr, 650km drive to Sandpatch. Despite my dreams, I never got there. Now, 2,900km away.... still just a dream, but with this excellent video... it is like being right there when watching it on the tv. Iron Horse out did themselves covering this very scenic region. And there is history in the video as pre-CSX paint schemes like Chessie make appearances, and some covered wagons as well. Excellent video.

As with the other "Into the Allegheny Range" programs, this one is superb. The 1990's where a great time to be trackside on CSX. By the time this video came out, the new C40-8Ws where on the scene to add to the variety. You'll see all kinds of paint schemes from the different roads that came together to form today's CSX system. It covers the whole line in depth. This is a must have for anyone who likes CSX or good ol mountain railroading!
