Hot Spots 23 Kansas City The Bottoms - BNSF Union Pacific Norfolk Southern Kansas City Southern DVD
★★★★★★★★★★4.8 of 5 (6)
Kansas City is home to some of the most intense railroading anywhere, with upwards of 400 trains a day passing through. We take a look at the old industrial area of The Bottoms, with trains from BNSF, UP, NS & KCT, and spend time at BN Crossing, with trains on three levels and continuous action through the day. Awesome! No narration.

Non-stop train watching. Had no idea KC was such a hotspot for train action. Will have to make a trip there just to photograph slow moving trains. Loved it.

Trains, trains, lots of nonstop trains. From the action in this program, it appears Kansas City is a great place for train fans. In fact, there's so much action (up to 4 or even 5 trains visible at a time) that Highball did away with narration for this program. That's a good thing if you like pure railroad sounds and action, but I would like to have known where all that spaghetti of tracks was coming from and going to, likewise the trains. It wouldn't have taken much to provide that info (or maybe a map). Aside from that, it is well photographed, as usual with Highball. It's a long video (so you get a lot for your money), shot in 2 locations (I liked the 3-level BN Crossing the better of the two), and the video quality of the BluRay version is truly compelling. One note - this is an industrial area, so all the trains move slowly (some very slowly) -- don't expect any dramatic scenes of locomotives flying by.

Great video. Have been to Kansas City several times and never visited either of the locations presented here. Video inspired a trip back to the midwest.

In the case of The Bottoms and BN Crossing, “Hot Spots” is a major understatement! Most of the trains that come in to or go through Kansas City go through either The Bottoms or BN Crossing, or both. Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Kansas City Southern (I love that “Southern Belle” retro paint scheme!), Kansas City Terminal, Norfolk Southern and Untion Pacific all go through these locations. This DVD is in 16x9 Widescreen format.

From Union Avenue in The Bottoms and 27th Street at BN Crossing, this DVD shows non-stop action, And that is probably pretty close to what you would see if you were there. Many times, there are two and sometimes more trains shown at thew same time, and in one scene you can see 5 trains at the same time. If you have Google Earth on your computer, looking at both locations will help you get a handle on the complex interlockings at The Bottoms, and the flyovers at 27th Street. And yes, you are looking at a flyover over a flyover!

There is no narration, and no train symbol markers. The photography is excellent, but a lot of it is under overcast skies. The kids probably will get bored quickly with this DVD due to the slow moving trains and very few horns. If you like non-stop multiple train action, this is a “Must Have”.

The number of trains is unbelievable! I was hoping for more KCS locos but mainly saw UP and BNSF. Narration would have been nice.
