A July, 2000 chase of 4449, with 4449 tucked in behind it! Taped between Gold Bar and Trinidad Loop we go from rain forest to desert, via the Columbia River. Power goes from BN green SD40's through War Bonnets and Oakway to Heritage 2 to a black SP steam engine. Wild! Pine trees and steep grades in the mountains, stunning scenery (I just sat and looked) in the Columbia River gorge, and Trinidad Loop, all in sunshine for a change. My first look at big steam, most impressive.

BNSF puts on an excellent show here with so many different paint schemes . Warbonnets, cascade greens, pumpkin orange units are all a hi-lite. The geographic change of the landscape is also very interesting to see as we are taken on a tour through the great forest region and end in semi-desert lands. To add to the railfan interest is the SP 4449 with an employee special. Lots of variety for everyone to see.

This program covers the BNSF's Scenic and Columbia River Subdivisions starting at Gold Bar, WA, passing through Wenatchee (where the Scenic Sub ends and the Columbia River Sub begins) and ending at Tunnel 11.1 near Trinidad, WA. The scenic highlight of the Scenic Sub is the longest tunnel in the US: the 8-mile-long Cascade Tunnel. Scenic highlights of the Columbia River Sub include paralleling the Columbia, crossing the Columbia River itself at Rock Island and the horseshoe curve at Trinidad.
This was filmed in July of 2000 as Southern Pacific 4449 was filmed traveling from Everett to Wenatchee on the 15th and from Wenatchee to Spokane on the 16th on the BNSF's Employee Appreciation Special.
Amtrak's Empire Builder is also seen 3 times eastbound at the Foss River bridge, westbound meeting 4449 at Skykomish, and at Scenic eastbound leaving Cascade Tunnel.
Supplemental footage of the BNSF 2000 EAS can be seen in Pentrex's "Steam Across the Pacific Northwest" and "Best of 2000" as well as Machines of Iron's "4449 Nightlight" programs.
