We begin with a May 2011 private photo charter on the famous Grand Canyon Railway which operates from Williams to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. There are daily tourist trains, which are primarily diesel powered, with steam generally only running once a month or so. But on this weekend we have former Burlington Route 2-8-2 #4960 for two days of photo charters. The first day is a mixed freight train with numerous exciting runbys. The second day features a passenger train consist, with more nice runbys for the charter participants. Besides making smoke for still photos the exhaust sounds are good and sharp for sound on the videos.
A February 2017 charter weekend features 2-8-0 #29, as well as 4960, mostly doubleheading a passenger consist, with some great runbys. We’ll meet the regular diesel tourist trains each day, and on the last day its powered by former MLW FPA-4 just so the photographers would get a bonus rare diesel for one scene. On one day there are cowboys with the train in the background as well. The line has high desert scenery as well as the Coconino Canyon with its rocky gorge and lush stands of trees.
As mentioned these engines do not run very often, and rarely are they photographed like they would be here on a private photo charter. There is loads of great steam action to enjoy in this fine show.
