Lionel and American Flyer - two names that are riveted in the memories of anyone who grew up in the late 40s and 50s. TM's new DVD takes you back to those happy times right after WWII when toy trains topped every kid's wish list. Sleek diesels, smoke-puffing steamers, log and coal loaders, milk and cattle cars - train boxes under the Christmas tree.
We interviewed collectors from all over the country, filmed their layouts, captured their memories. Fierce loyalties ran deep - and still do. Lionel dominated but American Flyer had their loyal following. So did Marx and Kusan.
The catalog illustrations made the trains look powerful and irresistible. You stared at the color pages and dreamed. Nobody cared if the angles and proportions were stretched a bit. Reality lived up to the fantasy.

This dvd is a nice compliment to all of the manufacturers of the era. While I find the collections and stories about the Flyer and Lionel stuff entertaining, TM has made so many videos about them already that they really are a bit redundant here. Which serves to make the point that the bits about Marx, Kusan and AMT even more exceptional because this is the first and only time I have ever seen anything of any of those manufacturers shown on a video or dvd. These are all wonderful trains and it is a rare priviledge to see them in action as they are nearly forgotten today. If this is your interest, you will want to buy this dvd!

This 2012 TM DVD features lots of interesting layouts and models as Joe Stachler explains the history of the golden days and the model companies, plus Tom McComas on visiting 2 different layout operators.
