UP's newest power working hard across the Southwest in New Mexico, Arizona and California. Scenic highlights include Steins Mountain, the Dragoon Mountain, the Maricopa Mountains, the Salton Sea and San Timeteo Canyon on Beaumont Hill. I've always liked SD70M's, but with the flaired radiators and the "Building America" flag paint, I think they are really handsome engines. See and hear them flying across the desert and lugging up grades.

A paint scheme that is very interesting. The UP Wings are a fine symbol of the railroad. Lots of great action to see in this video across the southwest USA. UP fans will love this video

Additional remarks by rrvideoman:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
Image quality: Good.
DVD Value: Good Value

This video had some strange editing when they show the locmotives ,very choppy.
They also just gave mile post location not where they where at with out a railroad map you did not know where the heck the video was shot.

Additional remarks by kc:
Narration: Could have used more.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
Image quality: A little rough around the edges.
DVD Value:: Fair.
Recommend to others? Definitely not!.

This video features Union Pacific's new (at the time) EMD SD70Ms on the very scenic former Southern Pacific Sunset Route across Southern California and Arizona. UP brought the Wings nose herald out of retirement for the SD70M's, and then introduced the American Flag paint scheme after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

The video starts out with the narrator giving the technical and mechanical specifications of the SD70M. After the specs are provided, the program shifts to MP1142 near Lordsburg NM with a coal unit train on it's way to Tuscon Electric's Tuscon AZ generating plant. The next scene is at MP1129 near Steins and from there works it's way west to California through the spectacular southwestern scenery. You will also see some GE C44-9Ws and a few EMD SD90MACs. And you will see a lot of the older power on intermodal and manifest trains. We are treated to meets at a few locations (this is mostly double track territory). And Surprise! You will see some engines, both patched and not patched, still in SP paint. A little over half way through the program, the narrator gives us the interesting history of the Salton Sea.

Narration is minimal, and the photography is excellent, with a couple exceptions, there is none of that distracting reflective glare from cab windshields (I think Peter Crook is one of the very few who understand the need for and use of polarizing filters!). You will see haze off in the distance in many scenes, but that is what you would if your were there in the late summer monsoon season (one of the early scenes shows a lot of flooding from heavy rains). There are milepost markers for many scenes, some of which also include location names, but no train symbol or direction markers. The kids probably will get bored quickly with this video – there is not a lot of loud horns and fast moving trains. This is a MUST HAVE for UP fans and everyone that likes the Southwestern scenery!
