A CENTURY IN STEAM

In 1923 the Denver & Rio Grande Western took delivery of ten new 2-8-2 locomotives. Built by the American Locomotive Company, they were part of a program to upgrade the extensive 3-foot gauge lines in Colorado and New Mexico. Soon after they became known as K-28's - K for Mikado-type and 28 for 28,000 pounds of tractive effort. All three surviving locomotives are on the Durango & Silverton, and the railroad ran a 2-day photo special in October of 2023 to celebrate "A Century in Steam."

K-28's #473 and #476 were used on the 100th Anniversary Photo Excursion, as locomotive #478 has been out of service since 2016. The first day featured #476 cut-in as a mid-train helper on the way up Silverton. The following day the locomotives pulled separate passenger and freight trains on the return to Durango. This program also takes a look at K-28 doubleheaders on the regular excursion to Silverton, plus the 2022 Fall Photo Train with #476 backdated to an early 1970's appearance. It concludes with a look back to 2019, with #476 in the snow on the Cascade Canyon Winter Train.
