If you love steam, you'll really enjoy this one. However, if you're like me, I like steam but nothing extra special, you'll find the videography up to 7Ideas' standards, beautiful scenery, but otherwise this is just a so-so video. It's OK and I'll keep it, but it's not one of my favorites.

Additional remarks by Rail Buff:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? Maybe.
Image quality: Excellent!
DVD Value:: Fair.
Recommend to others? Not unless they REALLY were interested in the subject matter.

In this program, it starts with clips of what's coming up. Followed by a map of the route from Portland to bend. Throughout the entire program despite this was shot over a multi-year span, 4449's whistle, mars light, Amtrak genesis diesels & even multiple private cars can change over and over again. The sun is setting in downtown Portland during September 2006, as 4449 leaves the now gone/demolished Brooklyn yard roundhouse with a rainbow in the sky. Beyond the yard, the red & Orange 4-8-4 whistles at various crossings as the camera crew waits for Doyle McCormick & his daylight team at the division street crossing. The whistle on the 2006 footages were used between 1975-1981, & again from October 1990 to May 2010. Darkness came as 4449 arrives at union station. Here a crewmember switched tracks while the daylight backs up. Morning came as 4449 is making some preparations while waiting for the passengers to arrive & board on a single day in June of 2017. During the 2017 trip which was one of the final specials for 4449 after a 1472 day inspection & before Amtrak's worst president Dick Anderson of delta airlines created the no steam specials policy, the indicator board on the daylight was numbered 925. With everyone onboard, McCormick takes the throttle as 4449 passes by some construction zones while leading the cascades special. Some people are onboard, While others chased the special. Back to the 2006 footage, 4449 whistles through the industrial brick buildings south of lake yard. During July of 2011 While 4449 was celebrating it's 70th birthday after the NRHS convention, it operates to wishram which is seen from a pedestrian bridge after crossing over the lift bridge over the Willamette river. Moments later, 4449 crosses the Oregon slough swing bridge 8.8 in 2017. The bridge was built in 1908 as was measured 1524 feet long. Afterwards, the daylight makes another passenger stop in Vancouver Washington. Back to the 2006 footage, 4449 is now at the Columbia river gorge as it leaves cape horn tunnel 1. Meanwhile in 2011, the daylight heads through saint cloud with heritage unit 156 in the consist. The 2017 trip shows 4449 entering & exiting the North Bonneville tunnel 1.5. Pounding the rails at 60 miles per hour, 4449 highballs through Stevenson in the daylights 70th birthday special to wishram. Moments later, it highballs through home valley. In October of 2012, 4449 whistles through hood. This trip would mark as one of the final times before the daylight heads for its 15 year rebuild. Back to the 2006 footage, 4449 is at North Dalles as the scenery changes from the forest to the mountain scenery. Meanwhile in 2012, 4449 is at horse lake. In avery during 2017, 4449 makes a meet with a westbound coal train as there is construction going on in the mountains at milepost 103.4 while the daylight crosses over the Oregon trunk lift bridge as it takes a 10 mile per hour restriction. The lift bridge measures at 3245 feet long, constructed as a swing bridge in 1912, & converted to lift mode in 1956. The footage zig zags from 2006 to 2017 & vice versa while the daylight crosses over the river as it heads for the Oregon side of the gorge. Deep in the mouth of the Deschutes river canyon, 4449 is on the .6% grade, then it leaves tunnel 1 at Oregon trunk. Next, the daylight negotiates a bend at Moody in milepost 4.9 during 2006 as it stops in a siding for service While a union pacific freight crosses the Deschutes river west of Biggs as it heads for Portland in the background. With service complete, 4449 is at oakbrook along the Deschutes river canyon which is south of Moody. In Oakbrook, 4449 makes a photo runby in September of 2006. Doyle McCormick notches down on the whistle cord while 4449 makes a wheel slip. One of the most photographed locations in the canyon is at the twin bridges over tunnel 2 as the red & Orange northern takes some slow orders. Leaving the tunnel 2 portal, 4449 crosses over the river again. Above the West bank of the Deschutes river, 4449 heads for Moffat in 2017. For a few miles, 4449 is rolling through trout creek on the 1.49% grade after leaving the canyon behind. This scene was used for the main menu of this program. Moments later, the daylight heads for the viaduct in 2017. Then it crawls alongside the mountain cliffs at 5500 horsepower. Afterwards, 4449 is on the 1.5% grade at Paxton with various farms in the background. As the tail of the 2017 special leaves, some cows are chasing the locomotive. During August of 2017, there was a solar eclipse as people from madras wanted to see this experience for once in a lifetime. Meanwhile at willow creek trestle, 4449 crosses over the bridge which is measured at 1050 feet long. The daylight highballs for bend as it crosses over the 300 foot casam known as the crooked river gorge. Next, we witnessed 4449 at the Smith rocks state park. In the late afternoon on a June 2017 special, 4449 is at terrebonne as some people are chatting offscreen. Just a few miles from bend in 2006, 4449 highballs through the crossing, then it takes the siding as it arrives at its destination where it'll be parked for service, & also be turned on the wye the next day before heading home. The Next day, 4449 is on the wye as the indicator board was changed to number 955. After a blowdown & a whistle show, the daylight heads for its coaches as it runs light alongside highway 97. Then it switches tracks and backs up to picks up its coaches. North of Redmond, 4449 passes through Prineville junction where the coaches & Amtrak genesis unit 93 must be turned on the wye. With the genesis unit & the coaches turned around, 4449 heads back for Portland in 2006 as some cows are startled by the whistle. During the October 2012 special, 4449 is at culver field. Again this was one of the final trips before the daylight heads for its 1472 day inspection. A similar scene is shown but With mt. Jefferson in the background during June of 2017. 5 miles south of madras, 4449 is at the junction in round butte. Here the workman throws the switch for the mainline as 4449 makes a nice departure in 2006. From the other side of willow creek trestle, 4449 makes a photo runby in 2012. Mt. Jefferson is in the background once again as 4449 whistles by the canal north of madras in 2006. Descending the 1.5% grade at paxton, 4449 heads for the Deschutes river canyon in 2012. Towards the small community of gateway, 4449 is back in the canyon during June of 2017. Then it whistles by the gateway station in 2006. Moments later, the daylight is back at trout creek. Near Cambria, 4449 is along the West bank of the river as a rafter wanted to chase the special While paddling through the water. Near the same location on the far side of the river, there is some pacing footage in 2017. During that year, there are multiple brush fire hazards along the West side of the river to the canyon rim at the 106 degree day. A 10 mile per hour slow order was made As 4449 crawls over the white river bridge while everyone enjoyed some rafting trips on the water. North of sheers bridge in October of 2012, 4449 is dwarfed by the cliffs. Then it enters the twin bridges while leaving tunnel 2. Back in Oakbrook, 4449 runs alongside the river on a 105 degree day in June 2017 at the 60 minute mark of this program. Just around the bend, 4449 rolls along the river in 2006. We're back in the Columbia river gorge as a union pacific mixed freight with 4 units approaches celilo. At the same time, 4449 leaves tunnel 1 on the Oregon trunk line as it creates a reflection show in 2012. Just a few feet from the tunnel, the daylight negotiates a bend in 2017. Crossing the lift bridge in 2006, 4449 enters the Washington state side of the gorge. The gorge stretches for 80 miles. A Barge is on the water while 4449 rolls by horse thief lake in 2017 which is west of Avery. East of Lyle, 4449 leaves tunnel 11. West of lyle, a cruise ship is near tunnels 8 & 9. Then the daylight goes in and out of both tunnels at Woldson. Moments later, it enters tunnel 7 at Hewitt, then it exits tunnel 5 at owl rock east of cooks in 2012. High above tunnel 2 at drano, 4449 gleams in the evening sun. West of cooks in July 2011, the once 70 year old northern rounds the curves at wind mountain. Once 4449 is out of sight, an old fashioned river boat shows up. At Stevenson, the American empress is docked as 4449 heads west for home. West of North Bonneville tunnel 1.5, 4449 crosses Hamilton creek in 2006. Beacon rock appears in the background as the red and orange northern heads for the cape horn tunnel while darkness begins to fall. Near milepost 28.9 in 2011, 4449 rolls through washougal. The passengers who booked the 2006 special from Vancouver gets dropped off at the station as 4449 heads for the bridges. It'll be about 10 miles before 4449 arrives back at Portland. But first he daylight crosses the Oregon slough bridge 8.8. 4449 crosses the bridge again as the sun sets in June 2017. Darkness falls as 4449 whistles by the warehouse in 2012. The sun sets in June of 2017 as 4449 reaches home base. The passengers thanked Doyle McCormick & the team for an unforgettable ride on the rails. More tower cranes are placed in the area. Back to 2006, 4449 heads for the since demolished Brooklyn yard roundhouse & turntable. Southeast of union station in 2011, 4449 crosses over the Willamette river while a rapid transit goes over the red and orange northern. Opened in 1912, this is the only Independent double decker lift bridge in the world. The sun is setting as 4449 arrives at the Brooklyn roundhouse & turntable in 2006 which was the daylights original home between 1981-2012. The cab of scrapped union Pacific challenger 3203 is next to the shanty while The rear of SP&S 700 pops out of the berth. Here the water tender gets uncoupled & 4449 takes a spin to be stored for the night as it parked next to 700. While the Brooklyn yard roundhouse & turntable had since been gone, 4449 & 700 are at the new Oregon rail heritage center in the south east corner of the city. Besides the 2 northerns, some diesels are also on display especially 2 from the nickel plate road.
