Conrail on the Pennsy Volume 3 Gallitzin & Cresson DVD Click to enlargeNote: Cover image may differ from actual product The Pennsylvania Railroad conquered the Allegheny Mountain spine at Gallitzin, PA via three tunnels; the Allegheny, Gallitzin and New Portage bores. The New Portage was at a higher elevation so there was a grade separation between Cresson and Gallitzin, thus the New Portage tracks were used mainly for eastward traffic because of the easier grade. In 1994, Conrail enlarged the Allegheny bore to two tracks to accommodate double-stack trains. The Gallitzin bore was then closed, abandoned and bricked over. Chester filmed at all portals and at Cresson where the Pennsy and Conrail maintained an engine facility for the helpers. Today the line is owned by Norfolk Southern. |
