Find a place that's easy to get to, where a concentrated number of trains are guaranteed to roll by in a short time span, and you've just located a railroading "hot spot." Pentrex camera crews traveled the eastern half of the extensive Conrail system, searching out the best places for traffic volume, accessibility, and the camaraderie that's shared among the railfans who favor these popular sites. The result is a fantastic portfolio of these sixteen great eastern hot spots:

CP Five and CP Potter, New Jersey; Bear Mountain, Selkirk Yard, State Line Tunnel, Syracuse, Lyons, Buffalo, and Binghamton, New York; Allentown, Reading, Rockville Bridge, Horse Shoe Curve, Conpit Jct., and Rochester Tower, Pennsylvania; and Palmer, Massachusetts.

Other railroads are spotted at these sites as well as Conrail, including New York, Susquehanna & Western; Central Vermont; CP Rail; and Amtrak. Among the wide variety of locomotives spotted are LMS and GATX lease units, Canadian National power, Amtrak GP40-TC, and the rare General Electric C32-8 (Conrail bought the only ten units of this model ever built).

Informative narration identifies all the trains by their symbols and gives you insights into the special characteristics that make each hot spot so exciting to watch. The beautiful photography and intense railroading action will keep you spellbound!

I live 10 minutes from the Bear Mountain Bridge, and I worked in a bordering town of Ridgefield Park NJ for a few years in the 1980s, and the chapters relating to those 2 spots on this dvd were great! The others were great too. I don't think the platform on the EAST side of the Hudson [narrator got this incorrect!]from which films were shot exist anymore. Aside from that, interesting locales and maps. Considering the paucity of East coast/Hudon Valley railroading films available on Pentrex, it's always cool to find a homie!

Although filmed some 15 years, this is an excellent DVD that still provides a good guide to the many hotspots in the north eastern states. All the locations are identified on clear maps, and there is helpful commentary both on the locations, including tips on the best photo positions, and on the trains and power shown. The clarity of the pictures is excellent, and stands comparison with modern camera technology. There is also a wide and interesting variety of motive power on display.

Conrail... The ashes to riches railroad. A railroad with plenty of great locations for viewing the trains at work. In this video, we see places like Bear Mountain, Selkirk Yard, Syracuse, Buffalo, Allentown, the Rockville Bridge, Palmer (Massachusetts), and of course no visit to the east is complete without Horseshoe Curve. There is a wide variety of power and companies, including Canadian companies that serve the northeast. It is a very fine video for all rail fans who want to see great railfan locations and are planning a possible trip to the regions once served by Conrail. At 2 hours long, it is an excellent value for the price.

With Conrail gone, this video is a great look back at Big Blue. Those were the days when Conrail was around and I get to relive them every time I watch this show. Conrail was not the only one to put on a good show in this DVD - action from other roads was great as well.

Varied locations, significant elevation changes, some great natural lighting, the varied topography of several states and up close action keeps the viewer's attention throughout the DVD. Many trains in the hold break up straight run-by action. The locations where rails split and merge always have good action and the best ones are all included. This DVD is full of variety from rural areas to the city. Imagery is excellent.

Great DVD I enjoyed it very much the photography and narration are excellent and informative. Conrail gone !!! man I can't believe it I remember when Conrail was formed and everybody joked about it but those big blue diesels sure grew on me and put on an awesome show every time I rail fanned the Conrail across there mid western districts. Both volumes are excellent and well worth the money. A++++
