Pentrex camera crews traveled the eastern half of the extensive Conrail system, searching out the best places for traffic volume, accessibility, and the camaraderie that's shared among the railfans who favor these popular sites. The result is a fantastic portfolio of these sixteen great eastern hot spots:

CP Five and CP Potter, New Jersey; Bear Mountain, Selkirk Yard, State Line Tunnel, Syracuse, Lyons, Buffalo, and Binghamton, New York; Allentown, Reading, Rockville Bridge, Horse Shoe Curve, Conpit Jct., and Rochester Tower, Pennsylvania; and Palmer, Massachusetts.

Other railroads are spotted at these sites as well as Conrail, including New York, Susquehanna & Western; Central Vermont; CP Rail; and Amtrak. Among the wide variety of locomotives spotted are LMS and GATX lease units, Canadian National power, Amtrak GP40-TC, and the rare General Electric C32-8 (Conrail bought the only ten units of this model ever built).

Conrail Hot Spots West

Railroading "hot spots" are favorite gathering places where railfans can expect to see numerous trains in a short amount of time. Following upon the success of Conrail Hot Spots East, which covered the eastern half of the extensive Conrail system, Pentrex set out to record many of the revered hot spots on the western half of the system in the states of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois.

The locations visited in Ohio include Ashtabula, Alliance, Crestline, the Cleveland Drawbridge, Berea Tower, Galion, Marion, Port Clinton, Toledo, and Ridgeway. Indiana sites include Elkhart, South Bend, Porter, Hammond, Muncie, and Terre Haute and in Illinois we view the action at St. Elmo and Effingham.

All Conrail trains are identified by their symbols indicating departure cities and destinations. Big Blue puts on an impressive show for us with its fleet of power that was relatively new for 1996, such as SD60s and C40s. Locomotives from other railroads are seen on Conrail trains as run-through power. In addition, trains belonging to CSX, Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, Illinois Central, and Grand Trunk Western are seen at many of the important junctions.
