BNSF's Fallbridge Subdivision
From headwaters in Canada, the Columbia River flows over twelve hundred miles to the Pacific Ocean and for many of those miles it marks the boundary between the states of Washington and Oregon. Cutting through the Cascade Mountains, the river slices through an 80-mile stretch known as the Columbia River Gorge where the basalt mountains tower up to 4,000 feet above the water. Nearby dormant volcanoes such as Mount Hood and Mount Adams add to the incredible beauty of the Gorge area.
Following the north bank of the river between Vancouver and Pasco, Washington is Burlington Northern Santa Fe's Fallbrook Subdivision. This is a prized site for railfans, offering spectacular vistas and nonstop railroading. Journey with Pentrex from Vancouver east to Maryhill along this scenic route and experience the variety of trains and motive power that ply this famous line. Enjoy scenes of Amtrak's Empire Builder and Talgo train, Swift RoadRailers, bare-table trains, trash trains, manifests, and unit grain trains. Motive power includes BNSF locomotives in Heritage I paint; a matched set of GE Dash 9s in Heritage II, pure sets of BN green power, and rare GP50s in classic Santa Fe blue-and-yellow paint. Also seen are SD40-2s, SD75s, GP38s, GP38-2s, B40-8s, B40-8Ws, and Dash 8-40CWs. The line is dotted with tunnels. You'll see many meets and great action over the swing bridge between Portland and Vancouver. For sheer beauty and interest, railroading on BNSF's Columbia River Gorge Fallbridge Sub just can't be beat!

Most of this video was taken in the last decade and as such there's a lot of orange. I was really hoping for more Cascade Green. It is too bad this wasn't shot 10 years earlier.

In volume 1 from 2005, which is one of the final Pentrex titles to be made on VHS, there is a wealth of action & scenery such as the gorge itself, operating bridges, multiple tunnels, Vancouver station, & even fallen flags from the cascade green units of Burlington northern to the red & silver warbonets of the Santa Fe. Amtrak appeared many times as well: the talgo cascades, coast starlight, & the Portland section of the empire builder. One cool thing about this DVD: the main menu & chapter index. The chapter index for this program looks like a railroad timetable.

This program covers BNSF's Fallbridge Subdivision from Vancouver, WA to Maryhill, WA although the subdivision really begins from Portland, OR and ends at Pasco, WA. Highlights of the subdivision include several tunnels, the bridge over the Columbia River that begins the BNSF's Oregon Trunk Subdivision, as well as Union Pacific trains that use the Oregon side of the river on the Portland Subdivision as the camera crews shoot from the Washington and Oregon sides of the river. Supplemental footage of the Union Pacific mainline along the Columbia can be seen in "Columbia River George Volume 2: Union Pacific's Portland Subdivision." Amtrak's Portland section of the Empire Builder is seen several times as well as the Coast Starlight and the Cascades both in Vancouver, WA adding to the variety of traffic on the sub that supplements the BNSF movements, which primarily include grain trains, trash trains to and from Roosevelt (east of Maryhill), intermodals, and manifests. In addition, there are a few BNSF freights that have mid-train helpers due to most of them tackling Providence Hill east of Pasco.
The narration is informative and very frequent. Because of this, potential viewers shouldn't be expected to be bored and sleepy that can often result due to a train taking a few minutes to complete a runby in my opinion.

Great scenery in the gorge with plenty of green, water and mountain backgrounds. Nice additives are barge action on the Columbia River and the train lift bridge on the Y over the Columbia River. Good natural lighting aids the videography. Several trains in the hold on sidetracks break-up the mainline action. Pentrex did not film this production but image quality is still superb. Several scenes were shot at a distance across the river creating small consists and should have been removed during editing.

In a word... "Awesome". Sunday night, movie time following milking the cows. The kids were really enjoying this video. The girl friend was glued to it enjoying the scenery, which the video is filled with excellent locations. And I was loving all the train action. There is something for everyone in this video, whether a die-hard railroad fan, or someone who enjoys great scenic geography, etc... This is one of Pentrex's best productions. Model railroaders will love the variety of scenes and get wonderful ideas. A must have have rated 5 out of 5.
