Winter storms blowing in from the Pacific Ocean bring heavy snow to the Cascade Mountains of western Oregon. The former Southern Pacific's Cascade Subdivision winds through this steep mountain pass and when the snow flies the Union Pacific calls out an elite team of snow fighters to keep the main line open.
This is your front row seat to UP's winter operations on "The Hill" between Oakridge and Crescent Lake. Ride aboard flangers plowing in some of the most remote portions of the line. See the classic Jordan Spreader number SPMW 4033 in action as crews work through harsh winter conditions to clear snow from the right of way.
Experience what it is like to ride powerful diesel locomotives through tunnels and snow sheds while plowing the main. Shot in stunning hi-definition video with superb digital stereo sound, you'll swear these snow fighting machines are rolling right through your living room!
Shot between 2004 and 2013.

Frame grabs:

UP 600 Flanger waits for a southbound before plowing the siding at Cascade Summit.

Moments later the flanger kicks up the snow with both blades down.

Looking out the fireman's window, the flanger passes a train tied down at Cruzatte.

Jordan Spreader lettered SPMW 4033 pushes back the snow banks below Abernethy.

Icicles hang from the walls of Tunnel 13 illuminated by the lights of the spreader.

The spreader crosses Shady Creek Bridge between Tunnels 8 and 7.

Night has fallen as the SPMW 4033 reaches the summit of the Cascade Mountains.

7Idea usually hits home runs with each of their productions. On this one, I think they only hit a double. But, no one bats 1.000.

If you are a little bit chilly, you will be COLD, after viewing this program. From start to finish, this is an exceptionally well done, professional program. The narration is informative and well done. The program is a fine representation of snow fighting in the modern era. For comparison with snow fighting in the past, I would suggest WINTER ON THE NARROW GAUGE, which I also purchased.
