Cab Ride through the Great Southwest is a 5 DVD set that begins in Kingman, AZ and ends in Albuqerque, NM with stopping points at Seligman, AZ; the Canyon Diablo Bridge; Houck, AZ; and Grants, NM. Volumes 1, 2, 4, and 5 were filmed on March 16, 1999 and involves a cab ride on an Amtrak Genesis P42 Locomotive #33 on Southwest Chief Train #4. Volume 3 is different in that it is filmed on February 15, 2000 on P42 Locomotive #83. As a result, much of this series is filmed one day after the Southern California Cab Ride which was filmed on March 15, 1999 and also involves the same engine. One interesting thing about the series is that the engineers in Volumes 1, 2, 4, and 5 wanted to remain anonymous unlike the other Southwest Chief cab ride programs where the engineers' names are explicity given.

In Volume 1, it is raining for the first 40 minutes leaving Kingman. But it eventually brightens up to a sunny and clear day for the rest of the trip to Albuquerque.

Volume 3 is interesting in that as was mentioned earlier it was filmed on February 15, 2000 instead of March 16, 1999. In addition, one of the engineers is Randy Decker, the same engineer that was filmed in the Cab Ride along the Santa Fe Trail series.

Volume 4 is interesting because the train crosses the Continental Divide. However, the batteries in the camera died and so the train wasn't filmed crossing the divide itself. So to make up for it, there are some trackside BNSF freights crossing the divide.

Overall, this is a great cab ride video as with all of the other Southwest Chief cab ride videos that Railway Productions offers.

The first 2 parts were shot in march of 1999 due to battery issues and the chief running late while parts 3-5 were shot in February of 2000 as prequel tapes to the Kansas City to Chicago programs.

Dvd's were good. Ride from outside of Flagstaff east was very poor. A different time of year would have been better. Did enjoy DvD's
