"Assault on Asheville" picks up where "Independence Limited '89" leaves off, with coverage of the incredible STEAM TRIPLEHEADER assaulting the Blue Ridge Grade east out of Roanoke, Virginia. With the grade conquered, dramatic steam action continue as NKP 587 heads south to Salisbury, North Carolina with a short freight car consist. Then it's back north to catch 611 in a solo performance as she runs from Alexandria to Lynchburg. Upon arrival in Lynchburg, the 1218 couples on the point and the two locomotives double-head to Salisbury. After an overnight layover in Salisbury, 587 and 1218 double-head to Asheville, NC with 587 on the point.

In the Berkshire Productions version of the 1989 NRHS Convention which is also the sequel to the 611/587 Independence Limited, the 2 engines along with 1218 perform a special one-way tripleheader from Roanoke to Lynchburg Virginia while heading to Asheville NC for the convention on July 16th of that year which also includes the 1918 Baldwin Built Mikado carrying 4 boxcars of bricks to Sailsbury NC, later on 1218 leads 611 on a doubleheader, as well as when 1218 teams up with 587 at the convention to Asheville from Sailsbury in the pouring rain later on during the photo runby. Locations include Roanoke, Blue Ridge Parkway, the N&W Overlook, Webster, Blue Ridge Bend at the S Curves, Bedford, a photo Runby at the Otter River Bridge, Lynchburg where the 3 engines split up, Evington, Altavista, Smothers, the Dan River Bridge at Danville, Stokesland, Browns Summit North Carolina, Greensboro, Thomasville, Lexington, Salisbury with an Amtrak Station, Alexandira, Cozeville, James River Viaduct, Deal Siding, Bentley, Reidsville which is the Headquarters of Lucky Strikes Cigarettes, Spencer over the Yadkin River Bridge, Statesville, the Catawba River Bridge, Claremont, Hickory, Drexel, the balloon loops & Andrew's Geyser at Old Fort, & Swannanoah Tunnel at Ridgecrest. There are also some historic silent films of N&W Steam with music added, as one of the N&W articulated engines push an Oscar Meyer Hot Dog Boxcar in the yard in one scene. Aside from Berkshire, there are other producers who also attended before and/or during the '89 NRHS Convention: the late America By Rail co-creator Greg Scholl, a long-gone out of business video company by the name of Trackside Video, Dave Goodheart Productions, & a handful of others. This is one of the couple Berkshire titles to be Narrated by Roger Morris, with some extra footage by Steve Neff.
