The natural beauty of Arizona's desert landscape created a dramatic setting for the unique group of shortline railroads that cut across the state in the early 1990s when this production was filmed. Powered by older-model Baldwin, Alco, and EMD locomotives, Arizona's shortlines provide us with an excellent opportunity to view these classic machines in operation. When these smoking diesels are filmed against a desert alive with the colors of spring wildflowers, the result is a visually stunning experience.
The copper roads are exciting to watch. You'll see the Copper Basin, San Manuel, Magma, and the Arizona Eastern in action. You'll follow an Arizona and California train across the western part of the state to its headquarters in Parker. This regional line is a first-class operation and its newly painted diesels gleam under Arizona's sunny skies. We conclude our presentation with a tour of the Apache Railroad and a ride on a road train to Holbrook and back. Five of the Apache's Alcos power the train; it's an awesome sight and the sound is incredible. This is an exhilarating experience you'll want to savor over and over again!

Beautiful desert flowers-yes, desert scenery-yes, but the..."interview"...with the western diamondback rattlesnake, apparently well fed, will get your attention in the first few minutes. Lots of variety here with subjects not often committed to video. The Apache Railway gets a substantial part of the coverage. The cab ride was a real treat for me, as was the (short) visit to the shops, all of which indicates the excellent state of repair and maintenance of these old Alcos. Mention is made of 2 roads not shown due to sporadic operation. It would have been nice if remnants of the abandoned carrier had also been shown. It would have made a more complete program. Worth the $, especially at TVD's price.
Additional remarks by TRAINMASTER: Narration:Just enough. Would kids enjoy this?I doubt it. Image quality:Excellent! DVD Value:Excellent Value! Recommend to others? Not unless they REALLY were interested in the subject matter.
