I give this DVD an 8 out of 10. What kept it from perfection was 2 things.
1- I didn't like 2 spots where they decided to look around the interior of the cab. They chose to do this shortly after passing the BWI station and just before entering Baltimore Penn Station from the westside of Baltimore.
I was hoping to see what Baltimore looked like as the cab approached these areas......me being a Baltimore native who use to live in that part of town.
2- They also chose to revisit the cab interior just after coming out of the tunnel after departing Balt Penn Station.
Once again, I was raised on this part of town, the eastside and was hoping to get a glimpse of what it looked like from the cab.
Overall, I love the DVD....well worth the money.
Additional remarks by Lawrence Johnson: Narration: Just enough. Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it. Image quality: Excellent! DVD Value: Excellent Value! Recommend to others? Not unless they REALLY were interested in the subject matter.

This is well balanced format and a credit to the production team. Sorry to say that the re-mastering from VHS to DVD leaves a lot to be desired. However having said that after watching the DVD was it well worth the purchase.
Additional remarks by The Dodger: Narration: There was no narration. Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it. Image quality: A little rough around the edges. DVD Value:: Fair. Recommend to others? Not unless they REALLY were interested in the subject matter.

Overall, this is a good video with nice shots of the tracks between D.C. and Philadelphia. However, too much time was spent showing the engineer, who is smoking, eating, or just looking out the window. Those parts should definitely be edited out.
Additional remarks by Philly Rail Fan: Narration CAN be turned off in special features. Would kids enjoy this? Maybe. Image quality: Good. DVD Value:: Fair. Recommend to others? Yes.

I guess this would be for the hard core enthusiast, its Amtrak, the NE Corridor and it all happens in the cab of an AEM7... I thought it was a "must have".
Additional remarks by railnut: Narration: Could have used more. Would kids enjoy this? Maybe. Image quality: Good. DVD Value: Good Value Recommend to others? Not unless they REALLY were interested in the subject matter.

This is a well done program. As it is a cab ride on the NE corridor, it can get boring. If you like cab rides, which I do, it should be in your library.

I love travelling by train, and I have travelled on the Northeast Corridor between Washington & NYC. The cab ride really brings the trip into prospective. It is fascinating to see the rails at high speed as we do in this video. The ride is very smooth and you can not tell you are moving at 125 mph. Excellent video. If you love trains. this is a must have.

Cab ride but thats all. This is a real-time, unabridged video of a 1-hour cab ride on an AEM-7 electric locomotive pulling a Metroliner of Amfleet cars from Washington, DC to Philadelphia. Pentrex filmed it in 1992, about midway between the last of the trouble-plagued original Metroliners (1981) and the first Acela Express (2000). Most of the time, you look out the front window (where track and catenary rush your way), but occasionally you see the engineer, his control stand, or the view from his right-side window. There is occasional but infrequent narration or graphics explaining the locomotive or announcing some of the stations and meets. If this is what you are looking for, you will get your moneys worth.
However, if you desire an expanded survey of Northeast Corridor operations, with more detailed explanations of the hotspots along the route, assisted by track diagrams and many runbys of trains negotiating these spots, this video alone wont provide it. It is not, for example, like the superb video on the pre-Amtrak California Zephyr by Emery Gulash and Green Frog, which keeps alternating between views filmed from the CZ and views of the CZ filmed from trackside. You would need to supplement this video with Amtrak Northeast Corridor Combo DVD, also filmed by Pentrex in 1992 and available at Train Video Depot. The trailers and customer reviews suggest it perfectly complements our cab ride DVD. However, I have not personally seen the full Combo DVD, so I cannot guarantee it is excellent. Also, keep in mind that all were shot in 1992; much has changed since then e.g., the AEM-7 locomotives are gone and Acela Express superseded the Metroliners.

Really enjoyable "comfort" RR video.
We hear clinical conversation in the cab, and good, though not obstrusive narration that points out relevant info. It's very exiting to see the the right-of-way appear before us at high speed; it never gets boring.
Some have mentioned video quality and I notice differences as well. It seems to me there were 2 camera used: One for the view outside looking forward, and one for the occasional interior shots of the cab and engineer. It seems the "inside" camera was used for about 15 minutes of the forward, out-the-windshield view. While the inside views are crisp, the view out the front is noticeably not as sharp. The vast majority of the film is shot on the "outside camera", and the video quality is razor sharp.
I've always been more of a steam and diesel fan, never caring much for electrics beyond their usefulness. This video changed that.
Highly recommend.

I had the VHS tape of the same program... But on DVD it's much better!
The content is the same... So, if I had to go through this trouble to get an even better viewing experience, that means the documentary is really EXCELLENT!!!
