Big Boy 4014 and Golden Spike 150 celebration was a memorable event and I was fortunate to experience the event. Although this video was about the 2019 celebration, they did feature scenes from the Union Pacific’s vintage film “Last of the Giants” which was released in 1960 after the steam era ended. When the Big Boys made their last runs in 1959, many people believed that no Big Boy locomotive would operate again, but as time passed on, Union Pacific 4014 has become the star of the fleet. Union Pacific 844 would also participate the historic event at Ogden Union station for a reenactment of the Golden Spike. The ceremony was held in Ogden because the original transcontinental route at Promontory Summit was abandoned during WWII. However, it has now become a national park and visitors can learn and watch the reenactment at Promontory Summit which was completed on May 10, 1869. Very fascinating video.
