In volume 5 of the recent turned 10 year old Michigan Odyssey series, the program starts with crew member pat Tracy being interviewed as he joined Doyle McCormick and the 4449 team in 1978 about less than a year after the 1941 lima Ohio built northern finished pulling the American freedom train. The entire journey would be on the return trip from harve to Shelby in Montana after visiting the steam railroading institute in Owosso as well as being stored in the Minnesota twin cities for 2 months while Operating the Columbus day weekend trip that was sponsored by the friends of the Milwaukee road 261 which unfortunately during that time, the 1944 Alco built northern is down for its 1472 day inspection. Operating at the throttle is Amtrak California engineer Bill stetler who was also the manager of Canadian Pacific 2816. For fireman duties, Bill's son Justin takes charge. During the westbound return trip home to Portland Oregon, there will be meets with BNSF freights, as well as some grain elevators. Throughout the journey, pat talks about the controls on the locomotive as well as some historical facts on 4449. Besides being in the cab, there is onboard footage from the baggage car behind one of the Amtrak genesis units. Keep in mind that these footages were recorded way before one of Amtrak's worst presidents: former delta airlines CEO Dick Anderson creating the No steam specials & private cars policy. Along the way, there are plenty of radio scanner communications. During the big 4 month journey from Portland to Owosso via St. Paul & Chicago, 4449 word a single gold mars light for the first time as well as one of the final trips that The locomotive would be wearing a whistle that wore between 1975-1981, & again from October 1990 to May of 2010 which has since been replaced by a new whistle in December of 2010.

The bonus Marias pass segment is also really good to experience.

Overall, with a nice ride for the westbound return trip home as well as some lovely fall colors, especially going around the mountains this is a great way to conclude the 5 part Michigan Odyssey series.
